Position Title: Shelter Support Staff
40 hours/week with Benefits
Purpose
The Shelter Support Staff is responsible for providing a safe, supportive, and clean environment for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. They will provide supervision and support to residents, assist with basic needs, and maintain the safety and security of the shelter property.
Reports to: Shelter Site Manager
Responsibilities
The Shelter Support Staff will be responsible for the following:
- Provide a welcoming and supportive environment to shelter residents, adhering to a trauma-informed care approach.
- Conduct intake and orientation of new residents, including explanation of rules and procedures.
- Maintain safety and security of shelter property, and report concerns to Shelter Site Manager/On-Call or to the authorities.
- Perform regular security checks of the shelter and surrounding grounds.
- Respond to emergencies and crisis situations as needed.
- Provide supervision and support to residents, including assistance with basic needs such as meals, clothing, and hygiene.
- Ensure that shelter residents comply with program rules and expectations.
- Document services provided and resident interactions in the designated database.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development opportunities.
- Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and case conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Shelter Manager.
Qualifications
The Shelter Support Staff must possess the following qualifications:
- At least one year of experience working in a human services field, preferably with individuals experiencing homelessness.
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Ability to maintain accurate and timely documentation.
- Ability to perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, or ready access to reliable transportation, and insurance for business travel.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
- The employee must be able to work well in a shelter environment, which may include exposure to noise, odors, and varying temperatures.
- The employee must frequently stand, sit, lift, and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
- Requires considerable walking (including climbing stairs).
