What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Deputy - Chaplain position at Clay County Sheriff's Office (FL)?
- Identifies the physical and psychological and spiritual needs of crisis victims, determines the resources available, and coordinates the assistance personnel/activities.
- Provides those in need with effective family counseling to assist in resolving personal/family problems and issues.
- Counsel inmates, deputies, civilians, and their families through emergencies such as death, illness, incarceration, family needs etc.
- Organizes volunteers whose purpose is to lead church services, for all the inmates each week.
- Provides and organizes quarterly calendar schedule of services.
- Reviews supporting documentation verifying that the religious volunteer/applicant is recognized as a priest, minister, Imam, or rabbi by the appropriate governing/overseeing regulatory bodies.
- Participates in various community outreach activities, functions, events, to promote community involvement in law enforcement, and law enforcement involvement in the community.
- Distributes religious literature and items such as Bibles, prayer books, devotional books, "Bible studies", etc. to requesters, and supplies items as appropriate to the religious sections of the inmate libraries.
- Writes/researches and delivers appropriate prayers for the situation at hand.
- Informs the general public and staff about the services and religious programs offered including as applicable, conducting orientation classes for recruits and newly hired staff and speaking at churches and other public forums.
- Attends and actively participates as appropriate in related business/fellowship meetings, banquets, luncheons, memorial services, award ceremonies and local ministerial association activities as required by agency policies/procedures.
- Recruits and monitors suitable religious volunteers, and/or coordinates their activities such, training classes and appreciation lunches, performing all required notifications in a timely manner to help ensure attendance/recognition and maintaining all appropriate documentation in accordance with supervisory direction and/or agency policies/procedures.
- Provides assistance to released indigents by helping them locate suitable housing if necessary and by making travel arrangements for them as appropriate.
- Receives/picks up and processes literature and monetary donations, providing receipts as required, and maintaining accurate records of all transactions and property received in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
- Solicits donations such as reading materials, audio/visual materials, and other relevant items to supplement budgetary expenditures and make essential items available to the inmate population.
- Coordinates and/or participates in special religious programs that generate donations (local church events) as necessary and requested.
- Receives and processes requests from clergy desiring visits with inmates/offenders in accordance with agency policies and procedures and in a manner that ensures that the rights and privileges of the inmate/offender are observed.
- Coordinates special holiday religious programs for different faith groups/religions.
- Remains in an on call status at all times (24 hours per day, 7 days per week), and will respond in a reasonable amount of time to emergency situations relating to deaths in inmate families, suicides and other emergencies as required.
- Arranges for essential religious dietary needs such as vegetarian diets, Ramadan diets, kosher diets and others as needed and in accordance with agency policies/procedures, FMJS requirements and applicable health laws/regulations.
- Creates and maintains an on call schedule for staff Chaplains, ensuring that adequate coverage will be available for all after hour’s emergencies.
- Supervises the efforts of religious volunteers and coordinate their involvement in worship services each week to ensure that inmates have access to religious services provided by a representative of their respective faith group.
- Drafts original correspondence/memoranda/forms or replies to correspondence received.
- Provides accurate information/directions/assistance to the public, department members, and/or other department personnel in a professional and courteous manner consistent with agency policies.
- Orients volunteers to agency and state policies, rules, regulations and statutory requirements.
- Attends Command staff, CSI meetings, award and promotion ceremonies for support, and encouragement, leading in invocation, as requested
- Attend briefing for all law enforcement and detention shifts.
- Be available for law enforcement and detention deputies in times of crisis.
- Be part of the CISM team.
- Display a high degree of emotional maturity.
- Keeps situations in proper perspective .
- Assists with training of new recruits.
- Assists the officer or personally informs the inmate/member/next of kin of the occurrence of a death/critical illness in a professional caring manner, and provide appropriate assistance pursuant to agency policy.
- Processes applicable incoming and outgoing documents and/or files in a timely manner consistent with supervisory direction and/or agency policies/procedures.
- Participates in cross-training with other co-workers; assists those co-workers when the need arises and learns new tasks by working together as a team.
- Reports identified or potential maintenance, safety, and/or non-compliance findings, hazards, and incidents to the appropriate personnel and/or department.
- Timely completes all assignments, special projects, and budgetary requirements (if applicable) as directed, adhering to applicable agency policies.
- Adheres to leave and attendance policies, including punctual arrival and completing full shifts. Informs the supervisor about illness or untimely incidents, reports overtime hours worked, and timely submits timesheet, attendance, and leave requests.
- Regularly checks assigned mailbox, phone calls, PowerDMS, and email messages, responding promptly and professionally.
- Makes assigned chain of command aware of anything noteworthy.
- Responds to supervision, guidance, direction, and feedback from executive staff and superiors in a receptive manner and in accordance with agency policies.
- Conducts themselves in a polite, helpful, courteous, ethical, and professional manner, abiding by the established code of ethics, and demonstrates a courteous and professional image when engaged in any activity with the public.
- Cultivates positive working relationships with colleagues and other agency units to enhance work area output and services in line with agency policies.
- Demonstrates an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the public and coworkers.
- Prepares for/conducts and actively participate in job-specific training.
- Operates and performs minor repairs for office equipment to manufacturer’s specifications and/or within the specified parameters pursuant to agency policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Five (5) years of relevant work experience.
- Proficient in Microsoft office products
- Speak and understand the English language
- Internal candidates must have successfully completed their probationary period
- Internal candidates with punitive disciplinary action within 365 days are ineligible
- Internal candidates must have completed applicable CCSO FTEP requirements.

Certification, Licenses and Registrations Requirements:
• Must possess/maintain a valid Ministerial Ordination license.
• CJSTC Basic Correctional Officer Certification.
Salary is negotiable for full-time positions prior to initial hire, if requested, based on verified experience up to step five (5) of the assigned pay grade. Current employee salary changes are determined based on internal methodology. Please contact Human Resources with any questions.
