Responsible for observing inmate/offender/detainee behavior patterns; screening inmate medical requests; responding to medical emergency; performing triage; reporting infectious diseases to appropriate agencies/departments. Incumbent must also take vital signs, administer medications, inventory SHARPS; and manage chronic medical problems. Duties also include completing, updating, and submitting required reports/documents/forms.

  • Observes, documents, and reports any unusual changes in inmate/offender/detainee behavior pursuant to FMJS requirements and in accordance with agency policies.
  • Notifies designated persons immediately during an emergency situation, accurately describing the situation and location and providing additional information and assistance as needed.
  • Assesses and determines the seriousness/nature of victims 'injuries in order to prioritize and classifies the order in which medical attention will be provided.
  • Reviews the inmate's medical chart, coordinate and correctly completes all information as required on the inmate transfer summary form in accordance with agency medical facility policies and FMJS regulations.
  • Oversees screenings of all inmate medical requests daily and makes the appropriate referrals pursuant to agency policies and applicable FMJS regulations.
  • Conducts a sick call clinic, which includes correctly respond to and care for inmate medical needs and complaints within the 48 hour limitation pursuant to FMJS regulations and in accordance with agency medical facility policies
  • Assists with clinic, psychiatrist, mental health, HIV clinic, labs, and x-rays. 
  • Documents and forwards all infectious disease results to the appropriate agency/department pursuant to state statutes.
  • Logs and reconciles usage of all SHARPS in accordance with OSHA regulations, and agency medical facility policies.
  • Prepares and administers inmate medications, while maintaining the security of the medical cart pursuant to agency medical facility policies.
  • Measures inmates’ vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure and pulse without causing undue pain or physical damage to the individual, pursuant to agency medical facility policies.
  • Responds to a declared medical emergency and provide the correct required medical attention pursuant 
  • Supervises, controls, and logs access to medical facility pharmacy keys in accordance with FMJS. 
  • Documents inmate medical history and performs a physical appraisals within 14 days of the inmate being booked into the detention facility pursuant to FMJS regulations and in accordance with agency medical facility policies.
  • Utilizes narrative detailed medical record to accurately document all patient contacts in a timely manner.
  • Reviews and countersigns diagnostic test results; and studies and forwards them to the appropriate practitioner for review and countersignature in accordance with medical facility practices and agency policies / procedures and applicable FMJS requirements.
  • Provides for emotional and physical comfort of the patients while ensuring the safety of the inmates and preserving the security and integrity of the facility.
  • Assists inmates with the activities of daily living with special attention to therapeutic significance and the overall well-being of the patient.
  • Implements physician’s orders as directed, consistent with agency policies and procedures and medical facility practices.
  • Provides information, advice and effective counseling/treatment to inmates with chronic medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiac disease and others as appropriate, consistent with agency policies and procedures and accepted medical practices.
  • Utilizes appropriate infection control techniques and will operate all emergency equipment properly and in accordance with medical facility policies and procedures to reduce the chance of infection and help ensure the quality of care provided to the patient.
  • Obtains informed consents prior to initiating psychotropic medications or performing invasive procedures, verifying that the patient is aware of the potential side effects and any other relevant issues as applicable.
  • Collects appropriate quantities and types of specimens to monitor inmates for psychotropic medication toxicity as ordered, and will label them accurately with all required information, then promptly forward them to the appropriate entity for analysis, consistent with medical facility policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates a positive working relationship with colleagues and other units within the agency in order to maximize work area output and services consistent with agency policies.
  • Processes applicable incoming and outgoing documents and/or files in a timely manner consistent with supervisory direction and/or agency policies/procedures.
  • Participates in cross-training with other co-workers; assists those co-workers when the need arises and learns new tasks by working together as a team.
  • Reports identified or potential maintenance, safety, and/or non-compliance findings, hazards, and incidents to the appropriate personnel and/or department. 
  • Timely completes all assignments, special projects, and budgetary requirements (if applicable) as directed, adhering to applicable agency policies.
  • Adheres to leave and attendance policies, including punctual arrival and completing full shifts. Informs the supervisor about illness or untimely incidents, reports overtime hours worked, and timely submits timesheet, attendance, and leave requests.
  • Regularly checks assigned mailbox, phone calls, PowerDMS, and email messages, responding promptly and professionally. 
  • Makes assigned chain of command aware of anything noteworthy. 
  • Responds to supervision, guidance, direction, and feedback from executive staff and superiors in a receptive manner and in accordance with agency policies. 
  • Conducts themselves in a polite, helpful, courteous, ethical, and professional manner, abiding by the established code of ethics, and demonstrates a courteous and professional image when engaged in any activity with the public. 
  • Cultivates positive working relationships with colleagues and other agency units to enhance work area output and services in line with agency policies. 
  • Demonstrates an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the public and coworkers.  
  • Prepares for/conduct/ and actively participate in job-specific training. 
  • Operates and performs minor repairs for office equipment to manufacturer’s specifications and/or within the specified parameters pursuant to agency policies. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education, Experience and Requirements:

  • High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).
  • One (1) year of relevant work experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Proficient in Microsoft office products
  • Speak and understand the English language
  • Internal candidates must have successfully completed their probationary period
  • Internal candidates with punitive disciplinary action within 365 days are ineligible
  • Internal candidates must have completed applicable CCSO FTEP requirements. 
  • The following items (or authorized equivalents) may be required at various steps in the application process: 
    1. Driver's License
    2. Birth Certificate
    3. Social Security Card
    4. Form DD214 for all periods served in the military
    5. GED or High School Diploma and Sealed Transcripts from the highest level of education
    6. FDLE Authority for Release (notarized)

Certification, Licenses and Registrations Requirements

  • CPR, AED and First Aid certification, IV certification, 
  • Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) License (Florida). 


Salary is negotiable for full-time positions prior to initial hire, if requested, based on verified experience up to step five (5) of the assigned pay grade. Current employee salary changes are determined based on internal methodology. Please contact Human Resources with any questions.
