Position Summary:
The Jailer performs a variety of detention facility safety and security, administrative, and physical custody of duties associated with the booking, monitoring, safeguarding, control, movement, and release inmates.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform incoming inmate booking activities in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
- Read, comprehend, interpret, and make decisions relative to legal and non-legal documents.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all statutes, policies, procedures, and potential liability issues related to the safety and security of inmates and the general public.
- Monitor all security-sensitive areas of the interior and exterior of the detention facility to ensure the safety and security of staff and inmates.
- Monitor all movement of inmates and visitors entering and departing the detention facility, control inmate, visitor, and employee movement within the facility and ensure unauthorized persons are not admitted into the detention facility.
- Monitor alarms, cameras, radios, intercoms, and phones.
- Monitor radio transmission for routine and emergency transmissions.
- Understand and respond to all emergency systems and follow established procedures for contacting the appropriate internal and external personnel and agencies in case of emergencies.
- Prepare accident/incident reports in accordance with policy and maintain any related records.
- Communicate effectively and coherently with inmates, professional visitors, and the public by providing information and directions.
- Maintain master and other supplicate keys in the control room and monitor use by authorized personnel.
- Prepare for and testify effectively in court proceedings, as needed.
- Perform inmate release procedures for inmate and property release from detention facility.
- All other duties as assigned.
Preferred Talents
- Working knowledge of Clay County Sheriff’s Office Policy and Procedures.
- Speak, read, and write the English language.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and written.
- Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practice and procedures, state laws, local ordinances and first aid.
- Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Flexibility in scheduling.
- Modern office practices and basic math skills.
- Relevant computer hardware and software applications
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain a Jail Certificate within one year of employment.
- Nebraska Operators License.
Physical Requirements
This position is routinely required to work with the hand or hands in handling, seizing, holding, or grasping motions and with the fingers in picking or pinching actions. This position is required to frequently lift up to 30lbs and occasionally may be required to exert up to 50lbs of force. The employee is occasionally required to maintain body equilibrium while bending at the waist or at the knees. The employee is required to sit, stand for long periods of time, talk and hear, and walk, climb, balance, kneel, or crawl.

Pay: $17.00 per hour
Expected hours: No more than 16 per week
Schedule:
- 12 hour shift
- Rotating shift
- Weekends as needed
