The Water & Engineering Technology department is seeking an Operations Specialist - Research. This position supports improvements in the operations of the District’s programs including the wastewater treatment facilities, watershed management and ambient water quality through research. Conducts research projects to monitor and evaluate water quality and program effectiveness.

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledges, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the KSAs would be:
2 years experience in conducting research related to environmental engineering or sciences.
College-level coursework in chemistry, biology, microbiology, quantitative analysis, laboratory methodologies, hydrology, environmental science, ecology, or related fields.
Bachelor's of Science Degree in biology, microbiology, or environmental science (or a related field) or engineering with an emphasis on chemistry, biology, or microbiology preferred. Master’s Degree highly desired.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Upon selection, candidates must possess and maintain a valid State issued driver's license.

- Assists with the planning, preparation, and conduction of research projects.
- Performs laboratory research required for research and innovation projects, including but not limited to DNA and RNA extractions, droplet digital PCR, and Oxford Nanopore sequencing.
- Prepares for and executes field sampling campaigns for data collection.
- Performs original data analysis and literature reviews for research projects conducted in collaboration with the research and innovation group.
- Assists with the preparation of project deliverables including publications and conference presentations.
- Assists with documentation of laboratory research standard operating procedures (SOPs) as they relate to the research function for the District.
- Manages research laboratory supplies used in the research function including consumables, inventory, ordering, receiving, and storage.
- Conducts research projects within required budget and time constraints.
- Drives a District vehicle for work related purposes.
- Basic research methods of data collection and analysis
- Wastewater treatment and industrial pretreatment principles and practices and/or theory and principles of water resource protection
- Basic laboratory testing and sampling procedures
- Appropriate research record keeping
- Basic principles of biology, microbiology, ecology, and/or molecular biology
- Laboratory methods for genetic analysis of environmental samples
- Gathering, evaluating, and interpreting data
- Use of computers and computer software for word processing, spreadsheets, and database management
- Technical writing to document research results and provide technical reports
- Identify, research, and analyze processes and procedures
- Organize and operate laboratory and field equipment
- Research and identify equipment or materials needed
- Develop alternatives and recommend strategies to improve reliability and cost- effectiveness of laboratory procedures
- Establish and maintain high quality service and effective working relationships with District employees and representatives of outside agencies
- Operate effectively in a team environment
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Learn appropriate computer applications related to the research being conducted
