Job Title: Substance Use Intake Specialist

Department: Addictions /Behavioral Health Services
Reports To: Program Manager/Clinical Supervisor

Position Summary:
The Substance Use Intake Specialist is responsible for conducting initial assessments and screenings for individuals seeking substance use treatment services. This role involves evaluating clients’ needs, determining program eligibility, and facilitating their entry into appropriate level of care according to ASAM level of care criteria. The Intake Specialist serves as the first point of contact, providing support, information, and resources to individuals and their families.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Client Screening and Assessment:

    • Conduct comprehensive intake interviews to gather information about clients' substance use history, mental health, medical history, and social support systems.
    • Utilize standardized screening tools to assess the severity of substance use and co-occurring disorders.
    • Identify immediate needs, including crisis intervention, detoxification, or referral to other services.
  2. Program Placement and Referrals:

    • Determine eligibility for specific treatment level based on assessment outcomes and program criteria.
    • Provide clients with information about available treatment options and explain the admission process.
    • Coordinate referrals to external agencies or resources as needed.
  3. Documentation and Record Keeping:

    • Accurately complete all required documentation, including intake forms, assessments, and case notes, in a timely and confidential manner.
    • Maintain compliance with federal, state, and organizational regulations, including HIPAA guidelines.
    • NJ SAMS Assessment and entry skills a must 
  4. Client Engagement and Support:

    • Build rapport with clients to promote trust and engagement in the treatment process.
    • Provide education about substance use, recovery processes, and available resources.
    • Collaborate with clients to develop initial action plans addressing their treatment goals.
  5. Collaboration and Communication:

    • Work closely with clinical and administrative staff to ensure seamless client transitions into treatment programs.
    • Attend team meetings to discuss client cases and provide updates on intake processes.
    • Maintain professional relationships with community partners to enhance referral networks.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience in substance use treatment may be considered.
    • CADC or LCADC preferred however, experience will be considered. 
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a behavioral health, substance use, or social service setting.
    • Familiarity with evidence-based practices in addiction treatment and recovery support.
  • Skills:

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage clients compassionately.
    • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) and other documentation systems.
    • Knowledge of community resources and referral processes for individuals with substance use disorders.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Certifications:

    • Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) or equivalent credential preferred.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or willingness to obtain within the first 90 days of employment.

Work Environment:

  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel to community events or partner organizations.
  • May involve interacting with clients in distress or crisis situations.
