Overview
Working as part of Cleary Gottlieb’s dedicated Pro Bono team, the Pro Bono Attorney or Counsel will focus on corporate and transactional pro bono matters primarily involving nonprofits and small businesses. The attorney will practice corporate law, while also assisting in the overall management and development of the firm’s award-winning pro bono program. The Pro Bono Attorney will sit in New York and develop the firm’s corporate- and transactional-focused pro bono projects, new matter pipeline, and knowledge management resources, and provide substantive support to corporate and transactional pro bono projects across all U.S. offices.
The ideal candidate will have significant legal expertise counseling nonprofit organizations and will be comfortable working with small businesses and social enterprises, with a willingness to learn other areas of corporate and transactional law as they arise.
Responsibilities
Typical duties will include coordinating and supervising attorney teams working on corporate and transactional matters, working with legal service organizations to help build and manage clinic programs, tracking progress and outcomes on corporate and transactional matters across offices and practice groups, building practice resources and monitoring relevant legal developments, vetting and staffing corporate and transactional projects, developing and coordinating opportunities to partner on projects with the Firm’s corporate clients, promoting pro bono engagement and contributing to elevating the profile of the Firm’s corporate and transactional pro bono practice.
While the Pro Bono Attorney or Counsel will specialize in corporate and transactional matters, the individual should be enthusiastic about supporting all aspects of the Firm’s pro bono program, including our robust clinical program, development of opportunities in new substantive and geographic areas, and overall risk management and engagement in the Firm’s summer associate program.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of corporate/transactional practice experience in a law firm and/or legal services organization (preferably both), with strong and demonstrated experience working with tax-exempt organizations and small businesses, as well as experience working effectively and meaningfully across cultures. Applicants must demonstrate a willingness to engage with clients, the Firm’s attorneys and staff, and pro bono partner organizations with compassion and positivity while advancing projects that improve quality of life, pursue change, and result in positive impact. A J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school is required; must be admitted to the New York Bar.
The estimated base salary range for this position is $200,000 to $250,000 at the time of posting. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of job-related factors, including skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities, geographic location, and performance. This role is exempt meaning it is not overtime pay eligible.
