Academic Advisor (Full-Time)
Detroit, MI
SUMMARY OF BASIC JOB FUNCTION: Provide or facilitate academic advising and related support services to traditional, nontraditional, graduate, and dual enrolled students. Develop academic plans and coach assigned students through degree completion. Monitor student retention, anticipate challenges, help remove barriers, and facilitate the registration of assigned students. Conduct semi-annual degree audits. Assist students with connections to other departments. Support functions of other departments by following up with students, as needed, including athletics, financial aid, business office, registrar, and faculty.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develop and implement an academic plan for each assigned advisee. Clearly communicate academic plan details to the respective student. Ensure students are taking required classes when available and assist in planning course offerings to meet the needs of all students.
2. Monitor academic progress through the Daily Population Report, Drop Out Detective and SOS meetings, intervening as appropriate and using multiple strategies (phone, text, email, in person) to encourage retention and degree completion through the development of academic success plans. Participate in the Academic Progress process with colleagues from multiple departments, advocating for student success.
3. Know and thoroughly understand Cleary’s courses, programs, concentrations, course sequences, professional opportunities, internship opportunities, and the scope of each so that the advisor can successfully coach students according to their academic, personal, and professional goals.
4. Assist students with academic planning and registration each semester. Proactively monitor student schedules and course selections, facilitating changes, as needed.
5. Refer students to resources and other University offices, as needed. Assist students in navigating campus departments and provide guidance as needed.
6. Assist with the planning and implementation of New Student Orientation as well as other campus activities and events.
7. Work with all departments at the University. This position may include some evening and weekend hours.
8. Understand the basic requirements for international students and students who receive veterans’ benefits.
9. Collaborate with external partners, including high school counselors and Early College coordinators
10. Build rapport with students through email, text, phone, and in person.
11. Assist student recruitment efforts, communicate with new prospective students, represent and promote the University within the community, serve on committees, and perform other duties as assigned.

1. Participate in internal and external staff training opportunities, as required.
2. Maintain accurate and up-to-date information regarding academic credentials and professional activities.
3. Stay current with local, regional, and national conditions that pertain to role.
4. Interact with internal and external stakeholders in a timely, courteous, and professional manner.
5. Abide by all conditions outlined in the University’s employee manual.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree or current enrollment strongly preferred). Degree or experience in business, human resources, education, or leadership-related fields.
2. Experience working with traditional or high school students.
3. At least one year of experience in academic advising, credit evaluation, testing, college-level teaching, career advising, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
4. Strong technology and communication skills. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects and competing priorities. Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
