Sterile products pharmacists assurepatient safety through clinical, pharmaceutical, operational, andregulatory knowledge of sterile products and clean rooms. Inaddition to traditional on-demand compounding, the Sterile ProductsTeam is responsible for preparation of a wide range of topical andinjectable ophthalmics, allergy immunotherapy, desensitizations,intrathecal medications, hazardous medications, anticipatorycompounding, and end-product testing. The pharmacists provideoversight of compounding personnel, aseptic technique, compoundingpractices, and clean room operations. Sterile products pharmacistssupport the Clinic and Department missions through teaching,continuous development and improvement of compounding practices,process and product research, and evaluation / implementation of newtechnologies. Key Roles and Responsibilities : I. CompoundingOversight a. Assure accuracy of compounded sterile products. b.Observe and correct aseptic technique and compounding practices. c.Manage sterile compounding personnel and workflow to assureefficient, safe, and timely delivery of compounded sterileproducts. II. Order Verification and Processing a. Review andverify adult parenteral nutrition orders. b. Manage emergent ordersfrom OR suites and critical response teams. c. Review and verifyspecialty medication orders including prostacyclins and factorproducts. III. Continuous Improvement a. Identify and respond toshifts in use patterns to minimize waste and maximize productivity.b. Continually improve work standards within the Sterile ProductsTeam to support patient safety and operational efficiency. IV.Regulatory Compliance a. Advance knowledge of regulatoryrequirements and trends governing compounding b. Assure completionand documentation of all required activities. OtherResponsibilities :
- Training technicians, pharmacists, and pharmacyresidents
- Precepting technicians, pharmacy students, and pharmacyresidents
- Testing and implementation of new technology Providespharmacy services and ensures the appropriate selection, dosing,administration, and dispensing of medicationorders.
