Clinical Specialist - Medical Rehab

As a Medical Rehab Clinical Specialist, you will provide clinical expertise in the evaluation and treatment of patients, serve as a clinical role model to all rehabilitation caregivers and provide top quality direct patient care. 

A caregiver in this position works full time day shift with 2 late days (6pm and 6:45pm).  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Continually expand and update clinical skills. 

  • Attend continuing education programs to maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of therapy skills and current activity in the profession. 

  • Initiate and conduct staff development activities for the department. 

  • Develop patient treatment protocols and complete protocol revisions. 

  • Take a leadership role in program development which may include new program planning, current program revisions or improving systems/logistics for a particular program. 

  • Provide regular updates to the Rehabilitation Services Manager on the status of ongoing programs and staff development activities. 

  • Perform an evaluation on each patient assigned to determine problems to be addressed, which may include range of motion, muscle strength, gait pattern, sensation, balance, coordination, perception, skin integrity, respiration, and determination of functional ability. 

  • Review patient chart for pertinent medical history and current hospital course, including test results and x-ray reports. 

  • Establish treatment goals and formulate treatment plans based on patient evaluation. 

  • Analyze and interpret patient's needs based on medical history, x-rays, tests and evaluation. 

  • Review physician's request for treatment and recommend revision or discontinuation based on evaluation findings. 

  • Maintain responsibility for all aspects of patient care. 

  • Monitor patient's medical status while in the department. 

  • Administer treatment using skilled techniques.  

  • Review and revise treatment plans as necessary as treatment program progresses. 

  • Delegate patient treatment to a Physical Therapy Assistant or Occupational Therapy Assistant as appropriate and direct and supervise the activities of support personnel while retaining direct responsibility for patient care. 

  • Educate patients and their families about the patient's functional status, appropriate preventive and therapeutic exercises, adaptive equipment, and modalities for post-discharge care. 

  • Ensure coordination of treatment goals and discharge planning by participating in patient rounds, team meetings, patient care conferences, etc. 

  • Attend continuing education program to maintain state-of-the-art knowledge of Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy skills and current activity in the profession. 

  • Supervise students assigned to clinical rotation in the department and prepare written evaluations of student's performance. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Bachelor's degree in physical therapy or occupational therapy. 

  • Current Ohio licensure as a Physical Therapist (PT) or Occupational Therapist (OT). 

  • Three years of experience as a therapist. 

  • Demonstrated clinical competence in a particular area of practice. 

  • Demonstrated leadership in program development/process improvement projects/staff and/or student development. 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

  • Experience with general orthopaedics

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk without assistive device and to maintain balance despite sudden load in order to support patient from falling, for example, during gait training.
  • Ability to lift and reach with arms sufficiently to lift patient's arm or leg during exercise program.
  • Sensation to touch and manual dexterity to be able to palpate muscle tension or to monitor patient's pulse.
  • Visual acuity to observe patient's gross movement, gait, etc., in order to analyze biomechanical problems.
  • Ability to speak clearly enough to instruct patients and families who may not be able to read.
  • Ability to hear or understand patient's description of symptoms and response to treatment.
  • Mental ability to interpret clinical data for the establishment and implementation of appropriate patient treatment.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems using critical thinking and decision-thinking.
