School-Based Heath Centers (SBHCs) are nationally known tools used to eradicate health disparities among children and teens within local school districts. Many of these facilities provide a combination of Primary Care, Mental Health Care, Nutrition Education and more to promote well-being. As a Medical Assistant on this team, you will work with kids from the age of four to 18, ensuring they feel comfortable when attending the program. Because SBH occurs during the school year, your focus will shift to assisting providers at the Family Health Center in the summer. While making a difference in your community, you will also have enterprise-wise opportunities, allowing you to explore the numerous advanced positions and educational resources within Cleveland Clinic. 

A caregiver in this position works days from 8:00AM- 4:30PM and 8:30AM – 5:00PM, with occasional evening/weekend requirements.  

A caregiver who excels in this role will:   

  • Assist with performing screenings and treatments by gathering and updating information related to health maintenance, identifying medication changes, updating allergy information, collecting specimens, performing tests and documenting patient care.   
  • Monitor and communicate changes in patient condition.   
  • Maintain equipment, medical supplies and examination areas.   
  • Perform administrative/clerical duties, such as filing, reception, scheduling, data entry and patient registration.   
  • Monitors SBHC website and all modes of communication (Outlook, Epic, etc.) for access to care. 
  • Receive student SBH packets/electronic registration from submissions, effectively register patients/students in EPIC and document appropriate clinical information in EPIC. 
  • Review SBHC registry report daily and prioritize outreach based on care gap closures needed. 
  • Attend school and community events to promote School Based Health Care, which may require some evenings and weekends. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:   

  • Graduate from an approved Medical Assisting Program OR military training as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1)  
  • Completion of a clinical externship OR extensive clinical experience  
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within new hire period  
  • Pediatric in an outpatient setting experience 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vaccines and vaccine administration 
  • Phlebotomy/Ambulatory experience 

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Medical Assisting Certification  
  • Successful completion of a Cleveland Clinic externship

Physical Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity to operate office equipment
  • Extended periods of standing, walking or sitting
  • Good visual acuity through normal or corrected vision
  • Light Work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
