Mercy Hospital's Telemetry Unit cares for a diverse patient population. Patient Care Nurse Assistants (PCNA) who attend to these patients need to be excellent communicators, alert, empathetic and responsive to ensure safety and the best healthcare experience possible. You will have various responsibilities, such as toileting, mobilization, bathing, room maintenance and other essential tasks. In this unit, you’ll find a strong sense of teamwork and a shared drive to make a difference in the community.
A caregiver in this position works various two 12-hour shifts or three 8-hour shifts, with every other weekend and holiday requirements.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN, such as checking vital signs and weight, assisting patients with personal care, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheters.
- Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.
- Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) before or during new hire period
- Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) considered
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)

Physical Requirements:
- Full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity and good eye-hand coordination
- Extensive standing and walking
- Medium Work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
- Physical Demand requirements in excess of those for Light Work
