Phlebotomist

The Phlebotomist is an integral member of the Medical Laboratory team whose primary function is the collection of blood samples from patients. Phlebotomists also facilitate the collection and transportation of other laboratory specimens (e.g. urine). Many patients, from children and teens to adults, often find needles and the idea of having their blood drawn frightening. As a skilled Phlebotomist, you can help put the patient at ease while obtaining all the required specimens. 

A caregiver in this position works 2 full weekends per month at a minimum and 1 -2 days during the week.

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts, based on the unit needs.  

4:00am- 12:30pm or 12:30pm or 8:30pm

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

• Collect blood, process specimens and perform reference laboratory processing in laboratory testing.  
• Perform related techniques, such as blood glucose tests and blood cultures.  
• Prepare samples for testing and manage specimens in the laboratory information system. 
• Prepare and ship reference laboratory specimens and resolve pending specimens and pending transports.  
• Monitor test ordering patients and requisitions to ensure compliance with outpatient laboratory testing.
• Maintain patient confidentiality.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

• High School Diploma or GED 
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (AHA)
• Proficiency in blood collection from patients of all age groups

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

• One year of college or equivalent 
• Six months of experience in phlebotomy and laboratory processing

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to perform work primarily mobile in nature
• Lifting up to 10 pounds with occasional carrying of objects up to 20 pounds
• Sitting for short periods of time
• Bending and stooping to file, move records, laboratory supplies, perform venipuncture, and move charts
• Communication by means of the spoken, written and typed word
• Finger dexterity and eye hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level
• Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests
• Potential for exposure to biohazardous or infectious agents when drawing and processing specimens

• Follow Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures
