Senior Technician – Acute Care General Emergent Surgery and Trauma Unit

Akron General’s 52A Surgical Unit is a post-surgical unit that specializes in general surgeries, such as bariatric gastric sleeve, Roux-en-Y, cholecystectomy, thyroidectomy, urostomy, and more. 52A is the primary trauma floor for patients not requiring intensive care, and these are high acuity patients coming from the PACU and ED who require close monitoring and mobilization.   

A caregiver in this position works evenings from 3:00PM - 11:30PM.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare units, patient rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission, returning surgical patients, transfer, or emergencies. 
  • Provide and document assigned care, such as bathing, changing/refreshing bed linens, dressing/undressing, feeding, etc.
  • Take and document the patient's temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, weight, and height. 
  • Perform treatment procedures, such as venous blood draws, enemas, application of ice and heat packs, non-sterile compresses, skin preps, setting up oxygen equipment, bed scale weights, setting up overhead trapeze and Buck’s traction.  
  • Assist with pre-operative and post-operative care, such as turning and positioning patients with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment and ambulating the patient as directed in a safe, prescribed manner. 
  • Assist and accompany patients during admission, transfer and discharge. 
  • Perform hourly safety rounds, anticipate patient needs and respond to patient call lights promptly. 
  • Document patient care in the electronic medical record.  
  • Complete ongoing competency requirements, education programs and mandatory training to maintain certification and/or licensure.  

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or obtain certification within new hire period
  • Prior job or educational experience providing basic computer knowledge and skills

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA)  
  • One year of recent acute care experience
