Job Description
The Animal Shelter Attendant is responsible for providing daily direct care and behavioral enrichment of animals at the Cleveland County Animal Services. This position is responsible for routine facility cleaning and maintenance, assisting customers and visitors, working with volunteers, and preparing and maintaining files and records.The normal work schedule is 7:30am-4:30pm five days per week. Workdays may include weekends and holidays and is determined by a rotating schedule.
Essential Functions
Cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures, general areas of the facility, laundry, equipment, instruments, toys, etc. according to established protocols.
Monitors, identifies and reports changes in the health and/or behavior of animals to veterinary staff
Participates with the intake of all animal types at the shelter
Handles animals with varying dispositions routinely, including during examinations, scanning for microchips, procedures, exercise, enrichment, and showing available animals for adoption
Administers prescribed vaccinations and medications to animals
Provides food and water to animals in accordance with the feeding program and prescribed special diets
Provides assistance and information to visitors related to pet admission, lost pet recovery, pet help support and programming.
Assist with and documents daily animal enrichment and behavior
Assist with onsite and offsite adoption events, vaccination clinics and resource distribution
Assist veterinarian staff as needed
Performs and assist with humane euthanasia of animals as needed
Provides animals with prescribed behavioral enrichment activities
Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Performs a variety of duties related to the care of animals held at the County's animal shelter. Cleans and maintains animal shelter facilities. Perform (if certified) euthanasia of sick animals in the clinic. Maintains computerized records related to adoption, intake, transfer, enrichment, animal behavior, clinic and sheltering tasks. Prepare animals for surgery; Shave and surgically prepare operation area under the supervision and direction of the Veterinarian; Transport animal from preparation room to surgery room; assist with recovery.
Experience & Education
High school diploma or GED and 1-year experience in handling and care of animals, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work frequently standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing and tasting or smelling; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires Animal Hair and Dander, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a loud noise location, (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic.).

NC Euthanasia Certification within 1 year of hire
NC Certified Rabies Vaccinator within 1 year of hire
Valid driver's license and insurable driving record
Work Location:
This role must work from the location identified at the time of hire with work travel required as needed. Any change of work location, even on a short-term or interim basis, must be reviewed by the Supervisor and HR for approval.
