Studio Institute Arts Intern in Public and Academic Engagement

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Docent Program seeks a Summer Intern to assist the Docent Programs Associate in the creation of a digital catalog of the docent book collection, organizing the physical library of books and periodicals used by docents, and developing a docent membership directory. The selected candidate will also work with the Docent Programs Associate, as well as independently, to write and research a new thematic gallery tour for the general public. This project enhances resource accessibility and supports the docent community and is ideal for detail-oriented individuals passionate about art education and museum work.

This internship opportunity will result in a variety of deliverables including:

Digital Catalogue of the Docent Book Collection:

  • Comprehensive digital database listing all books, including titles, authors, publication years, and subject categories.

Organized Physical Book Collection:

  • Library sorted by subject and title with clear labeling and a shelving guide for easy navigation.

Docent Membership Directory:

  • Professionally designed, printed booklet featuring a visually appealing layout with member names, contact information, and optional photos or bios.

A New Public Tour:

  • Design a theme, select artworks, research the artworks, and write information pages and engagement strategies for each artwork to be used by docents on public tours.

  

Over the course of the internship, the candidate will develop and attain the following skills and experience:

Hard Skills:

  • Digital Cataloging: Proficiency in organizing and managing data using digital tools or software. The intern will use a digital scanner, libib, and excel.
  • Graphic Design: Experience creating print-ready materials for professional use. Canva or Publisher are the design platforms of choice.
  • Library Organization: Knowledge of categorization systems for managing physical collections. Creating a space for public use and understanding how to make a collection accessible.
  • Art Historical Knowledge: Deepened understanding of art movements, styles, artists, and cultural context. Ability to analyze and interpret visual elements in art.
  • Research Skills: Conducting primary and secondary research using academic sources, museum archives, and databases. Evaluating the credibility and relevance of sources.
  • Writing and Editing: Developing concise, engaging, and informative scripts tailored to different audiences. Structuring information to create a logical narrative flow.

Soft Skills:

  • Project Management: Planning and executing a multi-phase project with clear deliverables.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring accuracy in cataloging and layout design.
  • Communication: Collaborating with museum staff and volunteers to gather information and feedback.
  • Problem-Solving: Addressing organizational challenges and optimizing accessibility for resources.
  • Audience Research and Engagement: Identifying the interests and learning levels of diverse audiences. Adapting content to be inclusive and accessible.
  • Storytelling: Crafting compelling narratives that connect historical and cultural contexts with art.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a full-time student pursuing a bachelor’s degree. You must be a Sophomore, Junior or Senior as of January 2025. 
  • Reside or attend college within Cleveland (Cuyahoga County) area.
  • Have a Student Aid Index up to $6,250 (This can be found via your FAFSA Submission Summary)
  • Pursuing a degree in Library Sciences, Museum Studies, Art History, Art Education, Studio Art, Non-Profit Administration, or Business.

The pay rate for this internship is $20/hr. The internship is 28 hours per week for 9 weeks. The internship is Monday-Friday, no weekends.

Studio Arts Interns spend one day a week participating in Arts Intern’s professional development and career exploration meetings.

 

The tentative start date for this internship is June 16th, 2025.
