Walton Family Endowment Fellowship in Contemporary Art
The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Department of Contemporary Art is seeking a graduate or post-graduate level intern to conduct research and writing related to exhibitions, acquisitions, and programming as follows. In fall 2026 the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) will present an exhibition centered on its recent acquisition of The Gift (1990-1994), a monumental work of portraiture by the African American artist Emma Amos (1937-2020). The intern will contribute research and writing that will be integral to this exhibition and that will be featured in its accompanying printed and digital publication. The intern will also conduct research and writing on contemporary Asian art, relating to the department’s forthcoming acquisitions and programming, including its summer exhibition Takashi Murakami.
Over the course of the internship, the chosen candidate will complete a series of research dossiers on each of The Gift’s portrait subjects as well as research dossiers on selected artists related to contemporary Asian art initiatives. Other written works will include brief entries on some of The Gift’s portrait subjects, and a blog entry on the upcoming exhibition Takashi Murakami. The chosen candidate will also be given opportunities to conduct tours of Takashi Murakami.
By completing these various projects, the selected candidate will develop essential skills in contemporary art curation such as learning the steps that go into the making of an exhibition and publication, building skills in research (archival, primary, secondary) that serves museum exhibitions and publications, building skills in writing for a museum audience, building skills in giving tours of museum exhibitions, and learning how to use the collection management software, Athena.
Each week of the nine-week internship will include a mix of research, writing, and potentially tours of Takashi Murakami as needed. Weekly milestones will include dossiers on 5-6 portrait subjects in The Gift, and potentially (depending on the candidate’s level of writing) 1 entry per week on one of these subjects. Research on contemporary Asian art will be woven into the above milestones. The selected candidate will work with the internship supervisor on developing a schedule for their authoring and submitting a blog post on Takashi Murakami over the course of the internship.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a student in an Ohio college or university, graduate of the same, or a student who graduated from a high school in Ohio
- Be a graduate or post-graduate level student
- If post-graduate, must have graduated within six months of the internship start date
- Have strong skills in research (archival, primary, secondary) and strong writing skills
