OLBPD Consumer Assistant - Ohio Library for the Blind and Print Disabled

Hours : Full time (37.50 hrs. per week)

Pay Grade : F1 = $22.2732 (SEIU union position)

JOB SUMMARY : Support the work of the Ohio Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, be a consumer

advisor and provide service to disabled Library users including general reference, reader’s advisory,

programming and general assistance.

JOB REQUIREMENTS : Education :

Associate degree from an accredited college or university or

A minimum of a high school diploma with a minimum of 2 years of relative experience as a consumer of services for

the disabled.

Experience :

Min. 2 years’ experience working with the public

Min. 2 years’ experience working with print disabled and persons with disabilities through direct or indirect experience

Proficiency in Unified English Braille (UEB) reading and writing required

Experience in a public library or public-sector is preferred.

User of adaptive technology and virtual and remote programming required

Ability to successfully interact with service animals on a routine basis

Technical Expertise :

  • Administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records,

and other office procedures and terminology.

  • Ability to proofread. Proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to ensure that
  • written materials prepared and reviewed are complete, succinct, and free of errors.

  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office or similar software is required. Relevant business equipment
  • including the use of basic computer programs and systems.

  • Proficient in utilizing virtual and adaptive technology, adaptive mobile apps, remote apps, BARD (Braille
  • Audio Reading Download ) and remote devices

  • Knowledge of basic reference sources.
  • Ability to effectively search, enter, edit, and correct information in the OLBPD database and related
  • databases. Operates OLBPD ILS system in tandem with its duplication-on-demand (DOD) system and

    reconciles information between both automated systems

  • Ability to follow complex oral and written instruction, and to identify exceptions. Read, understand, and
  • communicate information and ideas presented in writing.

  • Ability to set priorities and to organize data and workflow.
  • Ability to demonstrate presentation skills both oral and written.

  • Ability to adapt to new and updated software and procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate intermediate level computer skills including the use spreadsheet processing,

    electronic communication, database management, and Internet browsing.

  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Windows and Office, Linux, (or similar software) is required and
  • multiple operating and cloud based systems, personal assistant devices, and adaptive technologies

    used by individuals with disabilities preferred

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

    Evaluation of this position is based primarily on performance of the following essential functions, which include, but are

    not limited to :

  • Ability to relate to persons with disabilities, and an awareness of specials needs experienced by them
  • Performs public service for disabled persons including reference work consistent with RUSA
  • guidelines, assisting patrons to find materials, use materials and reserve materials.

  • Interviews patrons and maintains on going communication to provide reader’s advisory guidance.
  • Facilitates computer use and the use of adaptive technologies for the disabled including training
  • users.

  • Teach and present library programming to users in person and remote
  • Assist with expanding remote programming, streaming and virtual circulation
  • Assist, recommend and provide optimal customer service to fulfill reader braille requests
  • Enters and maintains patron information and reading preferences in the OLBPD database including
  • verifying subject codes.

  • Updates subscription information for magazines and periodicals and other materials.
  • Participates in collection development and maintenance including recommending items for

    acquisition, transfer, and withdrawal in consultation with the OLBPD Librarians and OLBPD Manager.

  • Assists with planning and presentation of programs for disabled adults and youth.
  • Conducts Library tours and class visits.
  • Participates in community outreach activities and events.
  • Prepares promotional materials including flyers, booklists, and other informational material.
  • Maintains and reports statistics.
  • Processes library materials, including receiving, transferring and withdrawing items.
  • Assists with circulation duties including charging and discharging materials
  • May represent OLBPD at community meetings and attend meetings, participate on committees. May
  • present at workshops and training.

  • Performs other duties as required.
