Public Services Associate (Bargaining Unit: SEIU) Pay Grade F

Hours: Full-time (five 7.5-hour days per week.) Location : Glenville

Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing general and paraprofessional patron assistance, programming support, circulation, research, collection, outreach,

and group service duties at one or more assigned branches or one or more assigned floors at the Main Library. Public Services Associates will have a primary branch or

Main/LSW assignment and will be designated as either: PSA West; PSA East or PSA Main/LSW.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Experience

Three-to-five years’ experience working with the public.

Three years’ experience working with personal computers, on-line tools, resources, databases and group meeting platforms required.

Intermediate proficiency (70% passing) in MS Office or similar software, as well as customer service, is required.

Three years’ experience coordinating adult or children’s programming strongly preferred.

Completed coursework in a subject specialty of the department or equivalent career experience preferred (Main Library Subject Departments).

Library experience and experience working in a working in a diverse, densely populated community considered to be a major metropolitan area preferred.

Technical Expertise

Demonstrated intermediate level knowledge of library practices, terminology, and classification systems and technology.

Demonstrated computer skills including use of windows, MS Office, internet browsing, group meeting platforms, and library related databases, systems and software.

General principles and objectives of information technology systems and programs.

Maintain knowledge and skills of various current adaptive and emerging technology to support patron, personal and business needs.

Intermediate level mathematics and English skill.

Read, understand, and communicate information and ideas presented in writing.

Experience working with all levels within an organization is required.

Proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to ensure that written materials prepared and reviewed are complete, succinct, and free of errors.

Knowledge of the subject area and terminology of the subject department (Main Library Subject Departments).

Working knowledge of a foreign language as specified in the position vacancy.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Develop and coordinate planning and programming under the direction of the Department or Branch Manager or Department or Branch Librarian.

Coordinate and participate in community outreach activities and events.

Perform patron assistance duties including, but not limited to: research, circulation, outreach, collection, reader’s advisory and group service duties at one or more assigned branches or one or more assigned floors at Downtown locations.

Perform public service support work such as assisting patrons of all ages, knowledge and skill with materials, technology, services, programs and facilitating connections with community partners.

Assist patrons with informational, meeting participation and research requests. Demonstrate and assist patrons with print and online reference tools. Communicate with and resolve routine patron issues.

Assist patrons with library computers and library supported software. Coordinate, schedule, assist, instruct, train and oversee patron use of technology equipment.

Perform direct patron and material circulation functions and effectively respond to complex inquiries.

Facilitate and conduct tours, visits, and prepare promotional and/or informational materials.

Ensure patrons feel welcomed, supported, safe, and engaged while visiting and/or utilizing library services and programs.

Support staff members, in particular substitutes and pages, and volunteers.

Perform collection development duties including, but not limited to, processing library materials, shelving, pulling materials, creating displays, placing and managing orders, and weeding of the collection.

May perform Lead Worker responsibilities.

May have responsibility for processing a complex collection such as government documents, microforms, serials, and other specialized collections.

May have responsibility for performing complex clerical procedures involved in special services such as Interlibrary Loan, Photoduplication, and fee-based services.

May participate in providing on-line reference services.

Process, identify, and/or add records to various software programs.

Prepare, verify, process and/or organize computer information, library materials, and/or documents/records.

Perform routine administrative tasks.

May attend meetings, participate in committees or training, etc.

Perform other duties as assigned.
