JOB SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for performing patron assistance, circulation, research, collection, outreach, and group service duties at one or more assigned branches or one or more assigned floors at the Main Library. Public Services Generalist will have a primary branch or Main/LSW assignment and will be designated as either: PSG West; PSG East or PSG Main/LSW.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High School Diploma.
Experience: Three years’ public service experience required. Experience working in a public library strongly preferred. Experience working in a diverse, densely populated community considered to be a major metropolitan area preferred.
Three years’ experience with personal computers, on-line tools, resources, databases, and group meeting platforms required.
Intermediate proficiency (70% passing) in MS Office or similar software, as well as customer service, is required.
Technical Expertise:
1. Demonstrated intermediate level knowledge of library practices, terminology, and classification systems and technology.
2. Demonstrated computer skills including use of windows, MS Office, internet browsing, group meeting platforms, and library related databases, systems and software. General principles and objectives of information technology systems and programs.
3. Maintain knowledge and skills of various current adaptive and emerging technology to support patron, personal and business needs.
4. Intermediate level mathematics and English skill.
5. Read, understand, and communicate information and ideas presented in writing.
6. Experience working with all levels within an organization is required.
7. Proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to ensure that written materials prepared and reviewed are complete, succinct, and free of errors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Evaluation of this position is based primarily on performance of the following essential functions, which include, but are not limited to:
1. Perform patron service inclusive of research, circulation, outreach, collection, and group service duties at one or more assigned branches or one or more assigned floors at Downtown locations.
2. Perform public service support work such as assisting patrons of all ages, knowledge and skill with materials, technology, services, programs and facilitating connections with community partners.
3. Assist patrons with informational, meeting participation and research requests. Demonstrate and assist patrons with print and online reference tools.
4. Assist patrons with library computers and library supported software. Schedule, assist, instruct, train and oversee patron use of technology equipment.
5. Perform direct patron and material circulation functions.
6. Perform collection duties including, but not limited to, shelving, pulling materials, assisting with displays, etc.
7. Conduct tours, visits, and programs.
8. Participate in community outreach activities and events. Prepare promotional and/or informational materials.
9. Assist with ensuring patrons feel welcomed, supported, safe, and engaged while visiting and/or utilizing library services and programs.
10. May assist with supporting staff members, in particular substitutes and pages.
11. Communicate with and resolve routine patron issues.
12. Place and/or manage orders.
13. Process, identify, and/or add records to various software programs.
14. Prepare, verify, process and/or organize computer information, library materials, and/or documents/records.
15. Perform routine administrative tasks.
16. May attend meetings, participate in committees or training, etc.
17. Perform other duties as assigned.
