Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate effective communication between hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of American Sign Language (ASL) and be able to interpret spoken language into ASL and vice versa in various settings, including educational, medical, Military and community environments. This role requires not only linguistic proficiency but also cultural sensitivity and the ability to adapt to different contexts.
Responsibilities
- Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals in real-time.
- Translate ASL back into spoken language for hearing individuals, ensuring clear communication.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while working with clients in various settings.
- Collaborate with educators, healthcare providers, and other professionals to facilitate effective communication.
- Adapt interpreting style based on the context of the conversation and the needs of the individuals involved.
- Stay updated on advancements in linguistics and interpreting practices to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to improve interpreting techniques.
- Must have experience working with Dual Channel Video Remote Interpreting Systems (DVRIS).
Qualifications
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is required; additional languages are a plus (Multilingual/Bilingual).
- advanced science and engineering technical backgrounds are needed to support meetings, conferences.
- to facilitate communication between English and ASL in various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics disciplines (STEM).
- Strong interpretative skills with a deep understanding of linguistic nuances.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.
- Experience in interpreting within educational, medical, Millitary or community settings is preferred.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity towards the Deaf community.
- Certification from a recognized interpreting organization is preferred but not mandatory.
- requiring travel outside Denver are estimated at 20 events per year.
