Position: School Nurse


Responsible To:
Building Principal


Qualifications:
1. Current license supplemented by a minimum three years of nursing experience.

  • Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in the methods, techniques, and used in nursing practice procedures.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Good communication skills: ability to work with students, faculty and general public in a diplomatic, friendly, and efficient manner.
  • Sincere desire to work with children/adolescents in the school setting.


Primary Responsibilities:

Assist in providing the fullest possible educational opportunity for each district student by minimizing absence due to illness, promoting a climate of health and well-being in District schools, and treatment of health related issues.


Term Of Employment:

Base annual contract of 10 months or per approved school calendar staff days.


Compensation:

In accordance with the district approved payscale


Paid Time Off (PTO):

10 days to be used in increments of full or half. No designation of sick or personal required.


Evaluation:

All teachers will be evaluated annually by Building Principal, or other supervisors as approved by the Board of Education

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains health records of students to include immunizations, screening programs, height and weights, medication administration, and health conditions.
  • Maintains and updates students’ emergency information yearly. Develops emergency action plans as needed.
  • Prepares health care plans for significant health problems and advises teachers of special care needs.
  • Performs screening programs to identify problems with vision, hearing, scoliosis, and dental.
  • Completes an annual audit of health records for immunization compliance.
  • Writes letters to parents to inform them of immunization needs, exclusion letters to those in non-compliance and referral letters to parents regarding vision, hearing, and scoliosis. Assists parents with access to available resources as needed.
  • Prepare annual health reports as required by the District and State.
  • Maintains log of health room visits.
  • Prepares and files incident or accident reports/ Workmen’s Compensation referrals and communicates with building administration.
  • Assesses student illnesses/injuries, makes decisions in terms of immediate care and disposition.
  • Performs physical assessments to evaluate student complaints, makes appropriate referrals, and provides follow up care.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by policy.
  • Enforces school policies regarding exclusion and readmission of students from school due to contagious and infectious diseases as recommended by the State Department of Health along with training faculty and staff when needed. Reports illnesses to the local Health Department as mandated.
  • Provides service to school staff by providing care of emergencies, illness, blood pressure monitoring, and serves as a resource for health and wellness issues.
  • Leads and participates in the development and implementation of the District’s Health and Wellness Committee.
  • Assist school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards/universal precautions in schools.


Supervisory Duties:

Will be assigned various supervisory positions as deemed necessary.


Skills and Abilities

Must be willing to learn and comply with district initiatives that involve technical and program skills. Such as but not limited to Student Information Systems (SIS) and online curriculums, as well as proficiency with computer based communication expectations.


Attendance:

Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position. Must follow district policy on employee absences.


Computation:

Ability to define problems, locate and reference district and state level curriculum and, or learning standards, and draw valid conclusions. Demonstrate computer competency in a wide spectrum of functions, ability to provide support for the District inventory, resource managers, and word processing technology programs including: demonstrated ability to learn and apply computer technology skills rapidly.


Hearing:

Must be able to hear a conversation in a noisy environment .


Language:

An individual who holds this position must have the ability to:

  • Communicate fluently verbally and in writing in English.
  • Preset information to students in an organized, and professional manner, which conveys professionalism to students, parents, peers, and stakeholders appropriately.
  • Read, analyze and interpret administrative correspondence and directives as well as Board policy and handbooks.
  • Keep student information confidential according to FERPA when required by law, except for from the building administration.


Physical Demands:

An individual who holds this position must frequently move in and around buildings and grounds, attend meetings and supervise designated areas. Frequently required to stand, walk; sit; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Regularly lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds.


Technology:

Basic computer skills, ability to learn new programs quickly, and manage the following: Basic Computer Word Processing, and Google Suites.

The work environment is consistent with a typical office environment; however, the individual who holds this position will occasionally be required to be outside in temperatures below freezing and above 100 degrees.


The individual who holds this position is occasionally, as designated in their contract, required to work irregular or extended hours for specific school events, such as school programs or conferences.
