Background
Clinic by the Bay is a comprehensive primary care clinic for residents of the San Francisco Bay Area who are without health insurance or the means to pay for medical care. Since 2010, our goal has been simple and ambitious: operate a free volunteer-powered health clinic. As a free model of care that relies on volunteers and not traditional fee-for-service reimbursement from insurance, Clinic by the Bay’s service delivery is resourceful, creative, and embraces innovative patient-centered technology.
Clinic by the Bay is almost entirely volunteer-powered and was founded on the principles of Volunteers in Medicine which engages retired and practicing medical professionals to provide patient care for free. We occupy the historic Alemany Emergency Hospital in San Francisco’s Excelsior District and provide the following services:
- Primary care and preventative health services
- Innovative and individualized health coaching programs
- Specialty care and referrals
- Mental health support services
- Dental care to medically underserved populations (in progress)
Executive Director Role and Primary Responsibilities
The Executive Director carries out the policy decisions and strategic plans of the Board of Directors. Primary responsibilities include Fundraising, Community Outreach, Strategic Planning, with other responsibilities including Finance and Operations, support for Development, Communications, and Human Resources.
Fundraising
- In partnership with the Board of Directors and staff, develop and execute a strategic plan to secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations and to cultivate, steward and retain donors
- Write or oversee drafting of foundation grants with the Development Manager
- Meet with major donors, and cultivate donors through written correspondence, in-person meetings and consistent follow up
- Work with Capital Campaign Committee to secure remaining funds (process is nearly complete)
- Oversee the implementation of special events in coordination with event committees
Community Outreach
- Identify and plan new community services that CBTB might provide to fulfill healthcare needs
- Build and maintain strong community partnerships with other non-profits, hospital systems, and private practices to secure additional healthcare access points and services and to bring in additional patients
- Promote awareness of Clinic by the Bay to enhance community involvement and engagement through a variety of outreach activities and efforts, including public relations and media opportunities, with consistent follow up
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships and collaborative partnerships with community groups, funders, businesses, companies, and other key stakeholders
Strategic Planning
Work with the Board of Directors to plan and implement a strategic planning process that best enables Clinic by the Bay to advance its mission. Strategic plan to include measurable goals, approved priorities and reflects n internal and external environments change.
Financial and Operations
Budgetary
- Create annual budget to be reviewed by the Finance Committee and adopted by the Board of Directors
- Provide monthly finance reports to the Board of Directors
- Ensure bookkeeping staff and accountant provide accurate and timely information for internal reports as well as audit and taxes
Operational
- Provide on-site management of day-to-day staffing
- Manage and monitor staff recruitment and retention
- Develop methods to expand operational hours and services
Preferred Skills
- Nonprofit experience
- Knowledge of healthcare industry
- Strategic planning and decision maker
- Leadership skills and experienced manager of staff and vendors
- Strong verbal, written communication, and public speaking skills
- Self-directed and ability to work within a team structure
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, delegate and manage time
- Experience developing annual budgets and overseeing expenses and revenue
- Bilingual Spanish (preferred but not required)
Proficiencies
Computer literacy in Excel, Google Workplace, QuickBooks Online, Word, PowerPoint, Zoom, Canva (preferred) Squarespace (preferred), CRM system management (preferred)
