Clinical Pathology Associates, Waco Division has an immediate fulltime position for a Laboratory Assistant to work in the Accessioning Section of the Histology Laboratory.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Laboratory Assistant assigned to the Accessioning handles a variety of technical and non-technical tasks and assignments in the histology laboratory to prepare specimens for macroscopic examination by a Pathologists’ Assistant or Grossing Assistant; specimen processing by histotechnologists; and diagnostic examination by a Pathologist.
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt TYPE OF POSITION: Full Time
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Log and accession cytology and tissue specimens into the computer system.
- Assists the pathologist or Pathologists Assistant during gross (macroscopic) examination of specimens.
- Accessions specimen requisitions (paper & electronic) into the computer system.
- Works with the CPA Waco Division Referencing Department to assign and distribute cases to Austin, San Marcos, and San Antonio based CPA Pathologists.
- Responsible for keeping the Accessioning area, Grossing Stations, and specimen storage areas clean and free of clutter.
- Ensures that CPA Waco Division cases are correctly separated for assignment and distribution.
- Take the labeled and grouped slides for routine assignment and distribution.
- Distribute Cases and slides to the assigned Pathologist.
- Pick-up and deliver specimens and reports, when required.
- Research cases, retrieve slides, blocks, and reports as needed.
- Assist with the Histology supply inventory.
- Assists with the ordering of Laboratory supplies from various vendors.
- Fill supply requests from clients, when required.
- Assists with the disposal of used chemicals and tissue specimens.
- Transports prepared slides and specimens to Ascension Providence, and other in-town locations.
- Prints patient(s) slide labels from the Anatomic Pathology computer system.
- When needed, coverslip H&E stained slides and label with the preprinted patient’s slide label from the computer system, carefully matching the appropriate specimen, block, and slide identification.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Management.

WORK EXPERENCE REQUIREMENT
- Prefer three (3) years of experience within a healthcare setting.
- Experience working is an anatomic pathology or clinical laboratory is preferred.
- Knowledge of healthcare and Pathology terminology is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, staff, and management.
- Ability to read and write.
- Strong ability to communicate verbally.
- Ability to work with biological and potentially biohazardous tissue and fluid specimens.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) required.
- Associates degree with college courses in biology and chemistry preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand and walk, occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch—some bending and stretching are required.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Use of the telephone is required.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds.
