JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Counselor
REPORTS TO: Principal
LENGTH OF CONTRACT OR WORK YEAR: 200 days
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides responsive services through:
- Individual counseling for students throughout the school year.
- Group counseling with students throughout the school year.
- Consulting with families, teachers, administrators, and other appropriate individuals.
- Assisting with referrals to other school support systems or community resources.
- Aids in individual student planning by:
- Securing and making available to students and teachers information and material on further educational opportunities, personal growth and development, and occupational opportunities and trends.
- *Providing orientation to students from “feeder” schools.
- *Conducting course selection.
- *Providing students with information on school district policies regarding counseling services, student activities, competency and grade-level testing, graduation, and college admission requirements.
- *Providing students with materials and information regarding career and post-high-school educational opportunities; assists with college application, scholarships, and employment applications including writing letters of recommendation.
- Informing families of student-related career and educational opportunities.
- *Consulting with administrators and teachers in the planning of course offerings that meet the needs and interests of students. (*pertains to upper grade levels)
- Assists in student appraisal by:
- Interpreting test results to appropriate individuals.
- Assisting in identifying students that need special services.
- Assisting in reviewing students’ progress at the end of each grading period.
- Promotes school guidance curriculum through
- Supervision of the Second Step program implemented by professional educators in K-8 classrooms.
- Demonstrates professionalism by :
- Abiding by the Ethical Standards of the American School Counselor Association.
- Adhering to board/school policies.
- Commitment to continual personal and professional development.
- Organizing office for effective use and prepares/submits reports, records, lists, and other paperwork accurately and timely.
- Participating in meetings as required or appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned by their supervisor or district administrators
- Regular in person attendance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling (MS Code 37-9-79)
- Valid Mississippi Department of Education Certification
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in school-site counseling.
