Job Title: Gas Distribution Technician Associate
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly Pay)
Business Unit: Operations – New Construction, Underground, and Repairs
I. Job Summary:
Under guidance from the supervisor or senior technician, this position is responsible for all duties associated with and related to the safe, efficient, and cost-effective installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities for residential and commercial customers on both transmission and distribution natural gas systems per 49CFR Part 192, CNNGA policies and procedures, and local/state regulations. Reports to the Supervisor of New Construction,
Underground, and Repairs.
II. Responsibilities and Duties:

Performed
Performs duties relating to maintenance and operation of natural gas underground pipeline, including but not limited to install, maintain, repair, relocate, and retire new or existing natural gas facilities and appurtenances for residential and commercial customers.
Develop proficiency in safe operation of a variety of equipment including but not limited to ditch witch, backhoe, tractor, dump truck, asphalt packer, fusion machine, air hammer, generator, welding tools, pipefitter tools, mechanic's tools, diagnostic instruments, hand tools, power tools, pipe locators, lift equipment, meters, skid steers, mini-excavators, gauges, etc.
Utilize and become proficient in technology devices such as computer, tablet, smart phone, radio, etc. for work assignments and to accurately record the required information for daily completion of assignment documentation.
Support company initiatives such as line locating, welding activities, and Unregulated
Services as needed.
III. Principle Accountabilities Include:
- Performs duties relating to maintenance and operation of natural gas underground pipeline, including but not limited to installing, maintaining, repairing, relocating, and retiring new or existing natural gas facilities and appurtenances for residential and commercial customers.
- Develop proficiency in the safe operation of a variety of equipment including but not limited to ditch witch, backhoe, tractor, dump truck, asphalt packer, fusion machine, air hammer, generator, welding tools, pipefitter tools, mechanic's tools, diagnostic instruments, hand tools, power tools, pipe locators, lift equipment, meters, skid steers, mini-excavators, gauges, etc.
- Utilize and become proficient in technology devices such as computers, tablets, smartphones, radios, etc. for work assignments and to accurately record the required information such as labor and material for daily completion of assignment documentation.
- Support company initiatives such as line locating, welding activities, and unregulated services as needed.
- Repair of leaks on both low- and high-pressure gas mains and services.
- Primarily interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as senior technicians, supervisors, co-workers, and customers.
- Assist with, plan, and set up work zone safety and traffic control measures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Secondary Duties:
- Performs various other duties as needed, including but not limited to reading meters, installing, and servicing gas appliances and plumbing, locating lines, repairing driveways and roadways damaged due to installation work, connecting and disconnecting service as appropriate, etc.
- Assists in maintaining an organized inventory of tools and materials used in daily tasks.
- Receives and responds professionally to inquiries, requests, and complaints from customers; provides information or refers problem to appropriate personnel.
- Is on call for after-hours and weekend emergencies according to schedule.
- Assist in performance of the annual leak survey.
- Daily completion of required documentation.
IV. JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must have and maintain an SC Driver’s License class D and the ability to maintain standards for insurability.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a related field
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
- Demonstrated computer Skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills.
- Within 24 months, obtain and maintain pertinent Operator Qualifications and successfully perform job-related skills as required.
Desired qualifications:
- Associate degree in a Technical Field
- 3 years’ experience in the natural gas industry.
- Possess and maintain a valid state of South Carolina commercial driver's license.
- Electrical experience
- Heavy equipment operation experience
- Welding Experience
Physical Requirements:
- Work is minimally strenuous but may require exerting up to 75 lbs. of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body; will involve walking or standing for extended periods of time.
- Primarily works outdoors and may involve working during inclement weather.
- Must be able to walk over uneven terrain.
- Must be able to work above or below ground level.
- Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and out-town, as needed.
