Job Summary:
The Cost Estimator will be responsible for analyzing project requirements, materials, labor, and overhead costs to develop accurate and competitive cost estimates for custom precision parts across aerospace, industrial, and marine applications. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and cost drivers in these industries, along with strong analytical skills to ensure pricing reflects both customer requirements and company profitability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cost Estimation & Analysis:
- Develop accurate cost estimates for manufacturing precision parts, including material costs, labor hours, machining processes, tooling, and overhead.
- Work closely with engineering, production, and procurement teams to gather detailed information for estimating.
- Review blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications to determine the scope of work and potential cost drivers.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend process improvements without compromising quality.
- Quote Preparation & Pricing:
- Prepare detailed cost breakdowns and comprehensive quotes for customers, including itemized lists for materials, labor, machine time, and other resources.
- Ensure timely delivery of cost estimates in response to customer requests for proposals (RFPs).
- Collaborate with the sales team to develop competitive pricing strategies for new business.
- Vendor & Supplier Coordination:
- Liaise with vendors and suppliers to obtain pricing for raw materials, components, and subcontracted services.
- Analyze supplier pricing and recommend cost-effective alternatives when appropriate.
- Cost Tracking & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of cost estimates and update them as necessary when there are changes in materials, labor, or production schedules.
- Track actual costs versus estimated costs for ongoing projects and report discrepancies.
- Assist in budgeting and forecasting for future projects.
- Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:
- Work closely with engineering, project management, and production teams to refine cost estimates and adjust to changes in project scope.
- Provide input on design and manufacturing processes to improve cost efficiency and manufacturability of parts.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Stay current with industry trends, material costs, and manufacturing technologies that may affect cost structures.
- Recommend improvements to estimating processes to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and turnaround times.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Business, or a related field, or equivalent work experience in cost estimation or manufacturing.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in cost estimating, preferably in aerospace, industrial, or marine precision manufacturing.
- Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, and manufacturing workflows.
- Knowledge of CNC machining, welding, casting, forging, and other relevant manufacturing techniques.
- Familiarity with aerospace, industrial, and marine industry standards and certifications (e.g., AS9100, ISO 9001) is a plus.
