CLOVERLAND ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE AUTO / TRUCK MECHANIC

STATUS : UNION, NON-EXEMPT, HOURLY JOB CODE : 55-2421

1. POSITION FUNCTION / OBJECTIVE

Repair, maintain, and test propane, diesel, and gasoline vehicles and associated equipment. Mechanics are expected to stay abreast of industry standards and are expected to adhere to all Michigan Department of Transportation and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration rules and regulations. The mechanics may provide maintenance and repair services, or consultative services, for all Cooperative fleet transportation, and accessory equipment.

2. ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

On a regular or frequent basis is expected to perform job planning, material requisitions, job set-up, and completion so that employees and the community are properly safeguarded at all times.
Responsible to see that tools, equipment, and stock are sufficient to complete assigned work. Accounts for all material, equipment, and tools utilized for project completion.
Document work and record findings as required. Report to supervisors any abnormal conditions that develop during the process of work.
Promote and follow safety consciousness and compliance. Observes all traffic rules and regulations while operating company vehicles.
Is expected to complete all required paperwork regarding work orders and service orders.
Is expected to work with the Director of Operations to establish and follow a maintenance program for regular testing and for the replacement of the cooperative fleet.
On a daily basis must be able to observe and listen to vehicles in operation to determine malfunction, and then determine the appropriate course of action for repair.
Is expected to maintain, install, and repair all systems currently in use by the Cooperative, as well as keep abreast on new technology. Align front wheels, change or recharge batteries, and replace transmissions and other parts as determined by supervision and mechanic working together as a team.
Is expected to maintain, repair, and overhaul gas, propane, or diesel engines.
Will provide examination of protective guards; loose bolts; electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and related systems, including specified safety devices on Cooperative equipment; and make repairs and adjustments.
Will lubricate, maintain, and repair moving parts, drives, etc., on power operated equipment, light vehicles, and general equipment to manufacturer's specifications, MDOT, and industry standards, etc.
May be responsible for fabrication of special lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices according to blueprints or schematic drawings.
At times, the mechanic may be responsible for other employees or contractors during the inspection, repair, and maintenance of our automotive and truck fleet. Perform the work in accordance with the equipment manufacturer's and organization's policies, procedures, and applicable law. Responsibilities include training employees, planning and performing work, ordering parts and supplies, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
Will be expected to perform analysis, using electronic test equipment, for fleet and make necessary repairs.
Reasonably respond to after-hours mechanical issues when not actively on call.
As directed by the Cooperative, may be required to attend trainings and seminars.
Performs other related duties and assumes other responsibilities as requested or directed.

3. WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily inside however may be performed outside as well. Weather conditions can be inclement at times, temperature may range from subzero to high heat and humidity. Must be available for work during adverse weather conditions.

Overtime work may be required.

Good physical condition and dexterity is required. Moving weights of 100 pounds or more is occasionally required. Medium work requiring lifting, carrying, and moving weights or using exertion of up to 50-75 pounds of force regularly, and up to 20-30 pounds of force more frequently. Is required to maintain a current CDL medical certification card.

Position requires the individual to be capable of stooping, bending, lying flat on the ground, reaching (overhead), climbing, grasping, pushing, pulling, and having the ability to walk long distances, or work in awkward positions and enclosed spaces. The position requires walking in all types of terrain, sitting, standing, and driving / riding in vehicle.

Good hand to eye coordination is necessary, as is the ability to read electronic displays and screens, printed materials, blueprints, and maps. Must be capable of utilizing handheld and manually operated tools that are coincident with the duties of the position.

Must be able to communicate clearly and accurately and possess good hearing as needed for work and / or safety compliance in a hot line environment.

Must possess visual color perception in order to differentiate wire and part colors.

Will be required to operate and / or utilize large truck (with an excess weight of 10,000 pounds) ATV's, snowmobiles, and boats. May also be required to ride in small single engine planes.

Motor vehicles, computers, small hand held or mobile electrical instruments and devices, customary office and business communications equipment are utilized in this position. The individual should be familiar with and capable of operating equipment utilized in the construction operation.

Must be willing to submit to random alcohol and drug testing per Cooperative and DOT regulations.

Hazards may also include working at heights, electrical and radiant energy.

4. ACCOUNTABILITIES

Reports to the Director of Operations.

Is expected to work collaboratively with all supervisors and management of the Cooperative for the efficient performance of these duties.

Mechanics are encouraged to use initiative and judgment in making decisions, remembering that the Cooperative's best interest can be affected by their actions. Mechanics should feel free to make suggestions for the improvement of operations and efficiency.

5. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

This position is union, non-exempt under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Non-exempt employees are paid on an hourly basis. Overtime shall be paid per the contractual agreement.

6. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Must have a high school education or equivalent GED.

Must attain and / or maintain a valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement. Upon hire, an employee may have up to 960 hours to obtain a Michigan Class A Commercial Driver's License.

Must be certified as a State of Michigan mechanic and adhere to all requirements of the certification (MCL 257.1304).

Must have 3 years heavy equipment / truck experience and / or college or trade school degree.

7. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must demonstrate knowledge and ability in the following : written and verbal communication, reading comprehension, judgement, decision making, time management, troubleshooting, operation and control, and equipment maintenance.

Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Demonstrate the ability to speak effectively with manufacturers, service and sales representatives, and employees.

Demonstrate knowledge of material resources in order to ensure appropriate use of equipment, facilities, and materials needed to do certain work and completion of projects.

Demonstrate knowledge and ability to perform various welding techniques and fabrications.

May on an annual basis be able to successfully complete industry specific testing as designated by the Cooperative

Must be competent with general office equipment use, including but not limited to : copier, fax machine, computer (iPad or tablet), and other smart devices.

Must maintain first aid and CPR certification as required by the Cooperative.
