Position Overview:
The Safety Manager will be responsible for ensuring workplace safety and compliance with health regulations at Clutter/Iron Mountain sites. The role involves conducting comprehensive safety and health studies, investigating incidents, and implementing programs to promote a safe work culture. The Safety Manager will provide leadership in driving safety initiatives, conducting root cause analyses, and maintaining performance metrics that align with government safety and health laws, standards, and regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Compliance and Risk Management:
- Conduct studies, inspections, and audits to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, as well as company standards.
- Lead investigations of workplace accidents and safety incidents, identifying root causes and recommending preventive measures.
- Stay current with evolving safety and health regulations, and implement new processes as required.
- Performance and Reporting:
- Establish and track key performance metrics (TRIR) related to safety and health, preparing detailed reports for management.
- Analyze safety data to identify trends, develop risk mitigation strategies, and drive continuous improvement.
- Provide regular updates and strategic insights to leadership on safety performance and areas for enhancement.
- Conduct Safety Training and Education:
- Organize and lead safety training sessions, including orientation for new employees and ongoing training for all employees.
- Deliver driver-specific safety training (e.g., defensive driving, safe loading practices).
- Monitor training programs for handling hazardous materials, forklift operation, and lifting techniques.
- Incident Response and Emergency Planning:
- Oversee the implementation of emergency response plans and procedures.
- Coordinate incident response activities, including communication with relevant authorities, stakeholders, and employees.
- Serve as the primary contact for all safety-related matters in emergency situations.
- Equipment Safety Management:
- Work with Ops to ensure proper functioning of all safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Ensure all vehicles are in compliance with safety standards, including regular maintenance checks and safety equipment (e.g., seat belts, backup cameras).
- Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams:
- Work with warehouse and logistics teams to develop safety practices specific to their operations.
- Coordinate with HR for employee safety onboarding and ongoing safety communication.
- Work with insurance and risk management teams to minimize liability.
Qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field preferred
- 5 years of progressive experience in safety management, preferably in logistics, warehousing, or a similar industrial environment.
- Operations experience in a warehouse & Transportation environments.
- Technical Expertise:
- In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable safety regulations.
- Strong background in accident investigation, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Proficiency in safety performance metrics, risk assessments, and incident reporting systems.
- Leadership & Management:
- Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a high-performing safety team.
- Experience providing technical guidance and strategic input on safety matters.
- Skilled at working on issues of diverse scope, requiring sound judgment and the evaluation of multiple factors.
- Skills:
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with a proactive approach to risk management.
- Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively convey safety concepts and reports.
- Proficiency in using safety software systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and data analysis tools.
- Performance Metrics:
- Incident Rate Reduction (TRIR) – Track the number of incidents and target reductions over time.
- Compliance Audit Scores – Aim for high scores during internal and external safety audits.
- Training Completion Rate – Ensure that 100% of employees complete safety training on time.
- Inspection Frequency and Findings – Maintain regular inspection schedules and reduce hazard findings over time.
- Cost Savings from Reduced Incidents – Measure any savings due to decreased incident-related expenses.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), or other relevant certifications.
- Experience in a logistics, warehouse, or transportation environment.
- Familiarity with Lean or Six Sigma methodologies for continuous improvement.
- Experience with moving bulky items. E.g., Furniture.
- Experience in the Moving & Storage industry.
- Working Conditions
- Ability to travel to various sites, on-site preferred, remote acceptable, up to 50% travel, initial focus in the first 6 months will be Norcal, mainly CA - but cover all of Clutter
- Flexibility to work non-standard hours as required to support operations and address critical safety issues. (standard corporate schedule, as a safety manager hours may change ex: AM may call on a weekend / nights)
