The Cleveland Museum of Art seeks a Design Production Manager. This is a managerial role, responsible for the day-to-day work of the production team that works in collaboration with exhibition and graphic designers to implement changing exhibitions, gallery rotations, collection galleries, and special projects. The position is responsible for setting and managing workflow, ensuring each member of the team has the complete information and appropriate tools to complete their work. The team includes specialists in the areas of cabinet making, painting, mount-making, gallery lighting, didactic and environmental graphic production, as well as two generalists that support the work of the division along with temporary staff and / or contractors. This position schedules and manages the workflow of carpentry, painting label production, mount making and gallery lighting requirements to meet established exhibition installation schedule.

Reporting to the Director of Design and Architecture, the Production Manager must demonstrate strong leadership skills, the ability to multitask and project manage, and the capacity to shift between big picture planning and task driven projects.

Requirements and Key Competencies

Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; 8-10 years in project management and / or production with an emphasis on teamwork and collaboration or equivalent combination of education and experience. Museum experience in design, production, conservation, or exhibitions preferred.

Employee must be self-motivated and possess strong organizational, interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills. Must be flexible, able to multi-task and work well under pressure to meet deadlines.

Prior successful managerial experience leading a team to meet departmental and company goals and objectives.

A flexible mindset and professional demeanor are critical to this role as the employee interacts with all levels of museum staff and the public. The employee must be a team-oriented individual who works well in a collaborative environment. The ability to shift workflow to adjust to institutional priorities is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Director of Design & Architecture, establishes workflow priorities and timelines to be prepared for all aspects of installation on individual projects; assesses workload, and confirms that adequate durations are allowed for in the planning schedule.
  • Establishes individual work schedules for each member of the production staff, considering sequencing necessary to reach completion in advance of deadlines.
  • Assesses staff performance, actively listening to concerns, and serving as an advocate for the work of the team.
  • Represents the department of Design & Architecture within the institution; serves as the key point person for facilities, operations, and security.
  • Confirms expectations and measures for success with Director of Design & Architecture, ensuring quality of craftsmanship, and highest level of finish in the galleries, public spaces, and behind-the-scenes.
  • Responsible for developing and managing Design and Architecture production budgets; monitors operating and exhibition project expenses, establishing projected expenses, and assuring that the actual work is achieved within budget. Tracks all expenses and ensures responsible purchasing among vendors. Keeps Director of Design and Architecture informed of expenditures and potential cost over-runs for all production projects.
  • Empowers specialized staff working in carpentry, painting, mount-making, graphics, and lighting to manage their stock of materials, holding respective staff members accountable for quality and timely deliverables.
  • Develops work schedules for Exhibition Production on a long-range, intermediate, and short-range basis in accordance with the museum's needs. Ensures adherence to schedule.
  • In collaboration with exhibition designers, determines necessity for hiring outside contractors and temporary production assistants to meet departmental and museum objectives.
  • Orders materials, equipment, and supplies as needed in accordance with departmental and museum purchasing procedures and budgetary constraints. Maintains inventory control.
  • Interprets company policies to workers and enforces policies and safety regulations. Analyzes and resolves work problems or assists workers in solving work problems.
  • Oversees and performs special projects as assigned by the Director of Design and Architecture.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
