JOB PURPOSE: Responsible for researching and developing ideas and processes for new products and improve upon the performance and design of existing products. This position requires an ability to apply engineering principles to turn design concepts into functioning manufacturable physical products.
GENERAL SUMMARY
Product Design Engineers work under general direction, applying their skills and expertise to generate solutions that may require development or sustainment of new or improved techniques, procedures, or products.
Responsibilities include planning, conducting, and evaluating approaches to meet project objectives in a timely, cost-effective fashion.
Successful Engineers are self-motivated and work effectively in team or individual situations. They have excellent communication, oral presentation skills and can handle multiple projects and activities simultaneously.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, model, and test prototypes for products
- Conduct research and create design proposals for projects
- Create product concepts, defining performance, and production criteria.
- Identify and select material needed for production.
- Produce final production drawings and specifications.
- Establish inspection criteria and quality control measures
- Create bill of materials.
- List cost involved in production.
- Make samples of working models for demonstration.
- Design and oversee production of fixtures and gages
- Identify appropriate production processes.
- Improve usability of an item.
- Design for manufacturing.
- Design for assembly.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred)
- 3 years of engineering experience
- Must have CAD experience.
- NO FIREARMS DESIGN EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.
- Must have proven desire to want to be in the firearms industry.
- Must have general firearms knowledge and safe handling practices.
- Must have general understanding of common machining and manufacturing processes.
- Able to read, understand and apply basic Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Work effectively both, independently and in a team environment
- Team player with a positive attitude and solid interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of, and ability to, utilize current hardware and software technologies including; word processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, Internet, and other applicable software.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
- Experience with SolidWorks and Solidworks PDM
- A self-starter with the ability to work with minimal oversight
- 2 years design experience with plastic injection molded parts.
- Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Strong technical, analytical, problem solving, and decision-making, skills
- Ability to manage multiple requirements organized and committed to meeting required deliverables
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and customer representatives
- Considerable writing proficiency and visual design skills
Work Environment and Personal Protective Equipment:
- General office environment, with some exposure to plant environment, with fork lift and other general hazards.
- Exposure to the outdoors, unstable ground, and some climbing.
- Within any of our facilities, employees may be exposed to manufacturing noise, airborne liquid chemicals, fine particulate dust, ambient temperatures, and industrial lighting. Work environment is similar to most manufacturing and distribution operations. May be exposed to excessive noise, temperatures, hazards associated with working around moving machinery, work in confined quarters, exposure to vibrations and shop lighting, continuous exposure to hot temperatures, may be humid, odors, dust, continuous exposure to mechanical hazards, and occasional exposure to chemical hazards.
The following Personal Protective Equipment is required:
- Safety glasses with side shields and hearing protection required when on manufacturing floor
- The use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required when a job task(s) is being completed in or around your assigned department or in another department, this includes safety eyewear, hearing protection, and safety footwear.
Must pass a background check (not prohibited from owning or possessing firearms) and a drug test.
