What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Peer Advocate position at CN Guidance and Counseling Services?
JOB DEFINITION:
Work with the CN Guidance NCTSI Team to increase access to trauma- and grief-focused treatment and services for our Long Island area's most underserved children, adolescents, and their families who experience these untreated or undertreated traumas.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- At a minimum a youth peer must, have a high school diploma, high school equivalency or a State Education Commencement Credential and possess a credential recognized by the Office of Mental Health, and receive specialized training and supervision required to be acquired within 6 months of employment.

A person aged 18- 30 years old who has lived experience with mental health and/or co-occurring behavioral health challenges in their home, school and/or community. Must have valid NYS Driver's License and the ability to drive for required field work.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as a role model for recipients.
- Assist with completion of NOMS.
- Educate recipients about self-help techniques and self-help group processes.
- Teach effective coping strategies to recipients based upon personal experience.
- Teach symptom management skills and assist in clarifying rehabilitation and recovery goals.
- Assist in the development of community support systems and networks.
- Provides the opportunity for the youth to expand the skills and strategies necessary to move forward in meeting their personal, individualized life goals, develop self-advocacy skills, and to support their transition into adulthood.
- Offer support necessary to ensure engagement and active participation of the youth in the treatment planning process and the ongoing implementation and reinforcement of skills.
- Actively engage in agency wide trainings and work groups as well as grant specific trainings on and for the trauma treatment model.
- Facilitate sharing of data with the individuals to whom it applies to facilitate partnered decision-making and to keep clients informed of progress
- Identify and implement quality improvement trainings and activities as part of professional development goals
- Complete Quality Improvement Training during onboarding and participate in Quality Improvement refresher training as needed.
