The Portfolio Management team leverages analytics synthesized from across the organization to ensure our underwriting strategies are optimally growing underwriting profit dollars. This team creatively leverages all of CNA’s available data and information, covering diverse functional areas such as exposure or policy attributes, distribution, risk control, operations, and claim data as needed.

In this transformational leadership role, you will lead a team and leverage your analytical skills, technical skills and strong customer focus to drive significant business impact across CNA’s business units and products.

This position provides the opportunity to work directly with senior underwriting leadership, and cross-functionally with underwriting and operational leaders to both understand the nuances of their business and to implement the analytical work product directly into core processes across the organization.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
  • Leads a team of data analytics professionals to implement automated scorecards, individual account scenario analysis tools, and accountability execution tools to help underwriters plan and execute CNA’s underwriting strategies as part of a cohesive execution process and platform spanning all business units globally.
  • Lead the translation of underwriting strategies to relevant leading indicators and operational key results, and design and develop analytics solutions that drive successful execution of the strategies.
  • Partners with department management to design complex dashboards using available data visualization tools in support of strategy execution and monitoring.
  • Ensures overall alignment between goals and strategies of the teams with management and business partners.
  • Acts as a technical resource and regularly identifies opportunities to leverage new IT solutions in support of analytics and reporting objectives.
  • Works independently, receiving minimal guidance; acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience
  • Directs the work activities and may have full management responsibility for the performance and development of subordinate staff in accordance with corporate strategic direction.
  • Responds to, manages and fulfills adhoc data requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Senior level knowledge of core functions of an insurance company and general insurance.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of financial, economical and statistical practices, procedures and principles, which may include a specialty area of the business.
  • Senior level interpersonal, communication and presentation skills. Effectively interacts with all levels of CNA’s internal and external business partners.
  • Senior level analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills to effectively resolve complex situations and issues.
  • Senior level project management, organization and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple projects effectively and lead teams.
  • Ability to solve issues with a sense of urgency; utilizes and manages the available resources to make informed decisions and achieve superior results.
  • Ability to creatively and effectively manage through ambiguous and challenging problems, lead through change and take appropriate level of risk.
  • Strong technical skills and knowledge related to designing and implementing data visualization tools. Knowledge of Power BI a plus.
  • Strong technical skills and knowledge of programming languages. Knowledge of Alteryx and SQL a plus.
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software systems.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Economics, Mathematics, Finance, Statistics, or related field.
  • Typically a minimum of ten years of related work experience. Minimum of two years of people management experience preferred.

In Illinois/New York, the average base pay range for a Senior Actuarial Consultant is $158,000 to $224,500. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
In certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $97,000 to $189,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
