Lonely Planet, the world’s leading travel publisher, is looking for an Audience Development Editor to join our digital content team. We publish travel guidance and inspirational articles on our website, printed guidebooks and travel inspiration across multiple destinations and interests, emails and SMS for our audience of passionate travelers, and we’re looking for someone to help optimize lonelyplanet.com content for maximum reach and engagement.
The Audience Development Editor will play a key role in expanding Lonely Planet's reach and impact. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to grow website traffic and audience engagement by optimizing our content for search platforms, developing an editorial strategy to capitalize on news and trends and optimizing our annual seasonal calendar.
You'll work closely with the content team – sometimes writing quick-turn articles to meet the needs of the moment – but also maintain close ties to relevant partners, including Marketing and Social Media, Email and SMS to drive traffic to LP.com and ensure we are growing our audience. The ideal candidate is equal parts strategist, analyst and storyteller with a passion for content performance metrics and emerging trends in the travel and lifestyle space.
What You'll Do :
- Manage Lonely Planet's publishing calendar and schedule, with an emphasis on timing for annual, seasonal content and destination intent
- Edit and optimize new and updated content, refine article templates for optimization, assume responsibility for testing headlines, URL structure and keywords to improve search performance
- Coordinate content to target as many relevant search terms as possible
- Leverage content for Google News, Apple News and any other third-party content distribution opportunities
- Create and refine best practices for refreshing previously-published content to ensure it remains SEO-optimized
- Collaborate with editors to identify search trends, key terms and trending content ideas driven by search; educate and inform editors about these trends and terms and keep the team updated on same
- Identify content gaps, duplicative content and brand-appropriate SEO opportunities
- Attend digital content meetings and share search trends and destination insights that could inspire story ideas and inform publishing schedules
- Support destination editors in identifying when and where search-driven destination opportunities are available for their regions
- Work with LP’s senior editorial team to implement training and communication for staff and freelance editors on areas around search optimization
- This role is ideally based in our New York City office, with a hybrid schedule, though remote candidates will be considered.
