What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) position at Coal County General Hospital?
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Scientist is responsible for all duties as it pertains to the Laboratory department. As a Laboratory Scientist, must be able to perform high complexity tests. Duties include but not limited to performing phlebotomy to obtain specimens via venipuncture, diagnostic tests, quality control preparation of curves and reagents, and other work as assigned by supervisor.
4 Year Degree (Bachelors)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs diagnostic tests and all associated duties such as quality control, preparation of reagents, and calibrations
- Stocks supplies and notifies supervision of dwindling supplies.
- Performs phlebotomy to obtain specimens as necessary.
- Coordinates with nursing to ensure necessary testing is accomplished.
- Maintains additional records as assigned by supervisor.
- Must be able to rotate call duty with other personnel in the department and respond in a timely manner, if necessary.
- Maintains competencies and proficiencies in current methodologies.
- Ensures that the lab is a clean work environment.
- Notifies appropriate personnel of any critical test values.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by laboratory supervision.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in one of the chemicals, physical, or biological sciences
- Graduated from an accredited medical laboratory or clinical laboratory training program, right out of school with no laboratory experience
- Blood Bank certified
- Eligible but may or may not have passed the MLS (ASCP) registry test yet
