Job Summary: The nurse extern supports registered nurses in clinical settings while pursuing a nursing degree. Responsibilities include assisting with patient care tasks, gaining hands-on experience, documenting patient records, and ensuring safety and hygiene. This role provides valuable learning opportunities and reinforces skills while externs may be waiting to take the NCLEX-RN exam.
Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:
Assists nurses in delivering patient care, including monitoring vital signs, administering basic treatments, and assisting with activities of daily living.
- Performs basic nursing procedures, such as taking blood pressure, temperature, and pulse measurements, under the supervision of a registered nurse.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to all healthcare regulations and protocols.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
Documents patient information and care provided in electronic health records, ensuing accuracy and completeness.
- Distributes drinking water and snacks to patients as applicable.
- Transports patients to various departments for ordered tests/procedures.
- Participated in training and development activities to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Reports patient complaint of pain to supervising RN.
- Observes patient's mental and physical conditions, reports any changes to supervising RN.
- Knowledgeable of sterile techniques and infection prevention and control procedures.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
- Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
- Attends in-service education programs, as assigned, to learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills etc.
- Treat patient and families with respect and dignity.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Performs all other duties, as assigned.
Regulatory Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program (AND or BSN) with completion of fundamental nursing skills coursework.
- Current LPN certification in the state of Oklahoma.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 6 months of hire date.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within 6 months of hire date.
Regulatory Requirements:
