Position Summary
Coalfire is looking for an experienced Senior Tax Analyst to join our Finance team in Chicago. An expanding tax department presents an excellent opportunity to join a fast-paced, high growth, Technology organization as their Senior Tax Analyst - Indirect Tax. Reporting to the Senior Director of Tax, as the Senior Tax Analyst you will oversee and manage all indirect tax functions within the organization. You will bring extensive expertise in indirect tax compliance, strategy, and management. In this role you will have the opportunity to be instrumental in ensuring compliance with all applicable tax laws, optimizing processes, and supporting the organization's strategic goals, by building the indirect tax function from the ground up.
\n- Lead technology initiatives (Avalara Integration) and adopt best practices to provide efficient and effective processes.
- Develop processes and best practices for the U.S. sales and use tax processes to improve efficiency and mitigate compliance risks.
- Responsible for the preparation and review of transaction tax filings, including sales & use tax, property taxes, gross receipts taxes, franchise, commercial activity tax, and business licenses.
- Prepare monthly accrual JE/reconciliations for franchise tax, gross receipts, sales tax, etc.
- Respond to taxing jurisdiction notices and work with them to resolve the issue related to these notices.
- Manage indirect tax compliance calendar and ensure deadlines are met.
- Maintain and update all of Coalfire’s legal entities sales and use tax registrations.
- Pursue tax recovery initiatives to enhance financial outcomes.
- Collaborate with business partners in successfully resolving indirect tax inquiries.
- Maintain U.S. taxability matrices of the Company’s products, purchase categories, and nexus footprint for the company.
- Research and document sales and use tax issues and monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, assess their impact, and implement necessary changes to maintain compliance.
- Research and write tax technical memos in support of each of the Company’s more complex tax positions.
- Assist in the preparation of the accrual and maintenance of sales and use tax FAS 5 reserves
- Lead the audit process, including the planning, documentation of audit assessments, appeals, and closing agreements.
- Assist Senior Director of Tax with minor income tax workstreams, such as Federal and State liability accrual/reconciliation, quarterly tax payments, and notices.
- Manage and perform special projects as needed.
- Monitor sales into Canada for GST/HST triggers.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive experience in indirect tax in the U.S.
- Experience with indirect tax compliance and audits.
- Demonstrated track record in working with automation technology and sales tax management tools such as Avalara or Vertex.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex tax matters to non-tax professionals.
- Strong knowledge of indirect tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements in the U.S. and Canada
- Proficiency in tax software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex) and ERP systems (NetSuite).
- Ability and desire to take on a variety of projects and prioritize competing priorities to align with business needs and strategy.
- Responsible for regularly making decisions and/or recommendations concerning:
- Strong written and interpersonal skills with the ability and flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
- Experience with State agencies, public accounting firms, or technology companies preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with data analysis tools.
- Master’s in Taxation preferred
- CPA is preferred
