Volunteer: Assistance with purging our funder profiles

Coalition to End Homelessness
Fort Lauderdale, FL Volunteer
POSTED ON 4/26/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/25/2025
The Coalition provides a number of services for people, including children, experiencing homelessness. We are a volunteer led and operated organization. Everyone you meet here will probably be a volunteer, many of them serving many hours a month. This is not a one and done. We find that our best volunteers are those who care deeply about helping people experiencing homelessness. Those not passionate about the cause tend to move along at some point or get easily overwhelmed by other thing in life. Most people are attracted to our "Pay the Rent First" Program which provides first, last, and security to homeless families. All our family mentors are volunteers who are able to help mostly single mothers and young children get settled. Other priorities are assistance with fundraising, so we can house more families, education programs for specific groups and for members of the public, collaboration with other like-minded groups, advocacy, and volunteer training and development. Whatever your skill set, if you have time to help us, we can find work for you to do that will make a meaningful difference. We were incorporated in 1989 and received our 501(c)3 in 1992. Over the years our work has changed and will continue to be responsive to community needs. I will end by telling you that we desperately need volunteers for many different positions (except feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving or Christmas or any other day). Whatever your skills, if you have time to contribute and care about the cause, we can use you.

,

We have over 2,000 Foundations in our files that we write to annually. Many of these Foundations have never given to us and need to be either purged or approached differently. We will need to have a training session which can occur online if you are not local, or in-person if you are in driving distance of Weston, FL. I will show you how to review 990s on ProPublica and you should know how to use Google Search to find out if a Foundation has a website to view. You will be given a simple form with 8 questions followed by your decision whether we should keep or purge. If you only want to go that far, that is okay.

If you are willing to go further there is a second form for those Foundations you think we should keep (about 1 in 10) asking for the information available for free on the 990 you have already reviewed. It is possible they have not given because we have the wrong address, or are asking for the wrong thing. You will provide us with the most up to date address and the kind of grants they do fund so that we have a better chance of approaching them successfully. This effort will ultimately result in more funding for housing homeless families which we believe is very important.

If you want to do more, learn more about grantwriting, that is also an option. About half of the people who have volunteered for this position are unable to commit to the time we ask volunteers to devote to this task. Therefore, I suggest that you think hard about whether or not you have the time/ability/interest in performing this task. You should be someone who is a self-starter, able to work independently, and able to use a Google on a computer. Reviewing 990's can be tedious, particularly for people with no finance background. I will show you how to skip through to the relevant information so it is less tedious but we are asking for people who can devote 2 hours a week to this task, and ideally more time. That does not mean you have to work on this every week, but at the end of a month, we expect you to complete a list of 50 or more Foundations. Also, we are looking for someone who can do this for at least three months due to the training involved.

The first couple Foundations may take you up to 10 minutes to complete as you get accustomed to the process. This will occur in training, and perhaps the first several forms you fill out at home. After completing a few of these forms, the process will get easier and you will mostly be able to complete forms in two or three minutes, but you should plan a time and space for conducting this activity weekly if possible. The ideal person for this task is probably an introvert who enjoys gathering data and also someone who cares about the plight of homeless families.

Volunteers who have more questions can contact me directly at lh@homelessfl.org. If you have questions, that shows interest, which is a good sign. The direct connect link is to our website, and after going there you would have to click contact us, and I will have to wait for your email to be forwarded to me as there is not a link to this task. Probably easier for both of us for you to just contact me directly.
