The Substitute –Instructional Designer Evaluates education technology programs and recommends integration into the curriculum. Collaborates with instructional departments and campuses with integration of technology into curriculum and instructional practices
Definition: Under general supervisor, substitute employees perform a variety of work in support of a college or district program or office. Non-academic, non-classified substitute: vacancy employees are appointed temporarily when recruiting to fill a permanent position. Non-academic, non-classified substitute: no vacancy employees replace classified employees who are temporarily absent from duty. Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are not part of classified service. Non-academic, non-classified substitute employees are at-will employees, have no entitlement rights to any position in the District. Substitute employment shall not result in the displacement of Classified personnel.
Substitute non classified employees who are appointed temporarily while the District is recruiting for the permanent position may not exceed 130 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).Substitute non classified employees who are temporarily replacing a classified employee may not exceed 160 working days within a fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).
*Retired CalPERS Annuitants: may not exceed 960 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30)* REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Evaluates educational technology programs and recommends integration into the
- curriculum.
- Researches, designs, tests, and implements interactive learning environments. Works collaboratively with production teams to develop desired outcomes where curriculum is blended with technologies for delivery and features for interactive use.
- Collaborates with Academic Deans, Academic Department Chairs, Military/Contract Education, Faculty Senate, faculty, Advisory Groups, and selected subject matter experts to improve the quality and scope of college courses and learning tools.
- Implements a wide range of dynamic and adaptive technology-based instruction and adult focused learning systems following modern teaching theories, including those using mobile learning applications and tools, as well as dynamic adaptive learning solutions.
- Consults with academic administration, faculty, and technical staff to develop leading edge instructional technologies and solutions for individual courseware implementation requirements.
- Develops and documents processes, use cases, and test procedures for Learning Management System programmers and administrators in the District and other colleges.
- Coordinates with Learning Management System vendor to ensure system reliability and functionality. Liaison between the vendor and the college, the District, and other colleges. Creates and maintains Knowledge Base for Learning Management System vendor.
- Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

Education and Experience
The position typically requires a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Security, or equivalent plus five years of progressive experience maintaining and developing computer systems and applications. Alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree and six years of experience may be accepted. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

- Accessibility: Strong knowledge of web accessibility standards

Short term/temporary assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. Typical hours are 8 am – 5 pm Monday through Friday. Regular attendance is considered an essential job function; the inability to meet attendance requirements may preclude the employee from retaining employment.
