DUTIES:
This is an intermittent temporary position in the USCG Academy’s Coastal Sail Training Program (CSTP) reinforcing 2/c cadets’ (rising Juniors) leadership objectives and providing the experiential learning opportunity to practice leadership skills in a peer-to-peer environment. The incumbent will be assigned to teach, coach, and mentor the 2/c cadets in developing their leadership, seamanship, and navigation skills during a two-week long (9-days underway) sortie in southern New England waters aboard the CGA Leadership44 sloops. The vessels travel in a squadron of four identical sailboats, pulling into a new port each night. The distance between ports is approximately 40nm.
As a core course for the USCG Academy’s Admiral James M. Loy Institute for Leadership, the Coastal Sail Training Program emphasizes the core competencies of Teambuilding and Technical Credibility.
Cadets are expected to:
- Develop Technical Credibility in basic sailing, seamanship, meteorology, situational awareness in the maritime environment and small boat operations, while fostering a “liking for the sea and its lore,” including knowledge of safety-at-sea procedures.
- Develop basic proficiency in navigation, particularly coastal piloting using paper charts (i.e., without the aid of a gyrocompass or electronic navigation) in areas that present navigational challenges. This will include training the cadets’ “seaman’s eye” in correlating charts to the visual presentation of the waterway.
- Expand their working knowledge of Coast Guard Cutter-like afloat operations (watch standing, logistics, preventative maintenance, teamwork, administration, operating parameters, risk assessment, etc.).
- Invest in individual and team growth in leadership and character development through experiential learning.
- Represent the Academy well to the boating public.
