Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to pack, pour, place medication in a container, and label for dispensing, sale, and distribution to patients, nursing staff, and healthcare providers.
- Knowledge of required auxiliary labels to be attached to any container of drugs, medicines, poisons, or chemicals sold or dispensed.
- Ability to enter pertinent patient prescription information into the pharmacy computer.
- Knowledge of dispensing decisions requiring judgment and deferring those decisions to a licensed pharmacist for resolution.
- Ability to obtain prescriber authorization for prescription refills in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Ability to respond to simple patient queries and redirect patients to the pharmacist for clarification on issues concerning drug information and interactions.
- Ability to conduct a needs assessment and process a daily medication order with designated wholesaler.
- Ability to operate automated patient refill requesting system.
- Ability to inspect shelves and other storage locations for outdated and unusable medications and remove them from stock.
- Ability to process returned patient medication orders and place back into inventory.
- Skills necessary to assists with all compliance related audits and inventories.
- Demonstrates knowledge of pharmacy software data entry and applicable reporting.
- Employ inventory management procedures to include ordering, returns, and expired medications.
- Demonstrates ability to check daily order invoices and properly stock medications.
- Prepare prescriptions to include interpretation, data entry, retrieval of stock medication, insurance information.
- Assists the pharmacist in collecting, organizing, and evaluating information for direct patient care, medication use review, and medication management therapy.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and to lift items greater than 40 pounds above shoulders.
- May require frequent bending of knees and back.
Qualifications/Education Requirements
Must have high school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from a formal training program is preferred but will accept equivalent work experience in lieu of. Must be Nationally Certified by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or equivalent.
Core Competencies
- Receives written or electronically transmitted prescriptions or requests for prescription refills from patients and healthcare providers.
- Verifies patient eligibility and ensures documentation is completed for all in-house patient assistance prescription programs.
- Establishes and maintains patient profiles and other records of medications dispensed.
- Prepares third-party insurance claims submissions, processes sales cash receipts from self-pay patients, and reconciles transactions all patient vouchering programs.
- Stocks, takes inventory, and places replenishment orders with designated wholesaler.
- Provides strong customer service and promote teamwork amongst other staff members.
- Operates a variety of automated dispensing and data processing equipment.
- Responds to simple patient and staff queries and directs them to pharmacist for clarification in issues concerning drug information and interactions.
- Keeps the work environment and equipment clean according to organizational standards.
- Ensures that proper safety procedures are followed and that all chemicals are handled in compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Performs other duties as requested/required.
