JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Lead Cook
PROGRAM: Head Start
CLASS: Non-exempt
REPORTS TO: QA Manager
SUPERVISES: Food Service Staff
JOB SUMMARY:
Help plan and implement a comprehensive feeding program to meet the nutritional needs of preschool children, by ordering and preparing food according to planned cycle menus, record keeping and following guidelines established by CACFP and Head Start Performance Standards. Assist with program reviews. Provide assigned training for staff and parents.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Participate in menu planning with Nutrition Manager, staff and parents.
- Procure food and supplies required for meals and snacks.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of food supplies and equipment.
- Prepare and maintain accurate computer records pertaining to nutrition.
- Follow safety and sanitation regulations in all facets of food handling.
- Prepare and serve designated meals and snacks as scheduled.
- Assist with nutrition education activities for children and parents.
- Arrange work schedules for cook and volunteers.
- Identify and report equipment maintenance needs.
- Provide family-style meal service and encourage participation.
- Attends and participates in nutrition education activities, trainings and meetings as necessary.
- Evaluate staff job performance annually at a minimum.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Ability to maintain records pertaining to food service and nutrition.
- Knowledge of adequate varieties of foods and amounts recommended for young children.
- Ability to calculate the quantity of food required to service a designated number of children and staff.
- Ability to maintain portion control.
- Knowledge and skills in proper methods of food preparation.
- Ability to manage a food service operation, including compliance with safety and sanitation regulations.
- Ability to establish rapport with children and parents.
- A minimum of one year of experience as food service supervisor or supervisory cook.
- Computer experience.
- Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude towards working as a team with their staff members.
- Must have empathy for children and low-income families.
- Must understand and respect confidential information regarding children, families and the program.
- Must exercise discretion and sound judgement in the performance of assigned duties.
- Must have a current driver’s license and have access to use of automobile with current insurance.
- Must obtain a tuberculin skin test or health card or statement of health from the local health department or physician before employment begins.
- Must exhibit willingness to attend all pertinent meetings and training and travel to all work locations. Must possess a valid first aid and CPR Certificate.
