Summary/objective
As a Head Pen Walker, you will be responsible for leading cattle movements and completing daily pen checks to identify and pull sick animals for treatment using safe and humane cattle handling skills. Individual may also be responsible for administering treatment to sick animals.

As a Head Pen Walker, you will be responsible for leading cattle movements and completing daily pen checks to identify and pull sick animals for treatment using safe and humane cattle handling skills. Individual may also be responsible for administering treatment to sick animals.
Essential functions

- Review daily agenda for cattle movements.
- If shipping, perform and verify head counts, retrieve cattle from all applicable pens and move to scales and shipping pens.
- Walk pens safely and handle cattle in a manner to minimize stress.
- Evaluate cattle based off of appearance and other signs of illness to make decision about pulling animals for treatment.
- Handle cattle in a calm and quiet manner, according to BQA guidelines.
- Evaluate assigned hospital and specialty pens for re-treatment or movement to home pens.
- Gather and move strays back to appropriate lots and pens.
- Notify appropriate personnel regarding mortalities and repairs or maintenance needed.
- Maintain appropriate physical condition of horse(s) and tack.
- Treat livestock according to practices established by management and consulting veterinarian and administers treatment in a humane manner in accordance with product labeling.
- Assist in maintaining accurate computer data entry and thorough record keeping ensuring no animal leaves the feedyard without meeting requirements. This would include recording lot number; hospital tag number; withdrawal dates; and treatment administered to each animal; etc.
- Ensure compliance with all OSHA/Safety procedures, rules and regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Adequate verbal and written communication skills.
- Adequate mathematical skills: ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide numbers.
- Knowledge of cattle feedlot industry is highly desirable.
- Willingness to work non-traditional hours as required

Work environment
- Required to work at times in extreme weather conditions, such as rain, snow, wind, heat, cold.
- Ability to work nights on occasions, weekends, and holidays as schedule requires.
Physical demands
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
- Ability to work extended hours 10-11 hours per day.
- This individual must be able to occasionally lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Required education and experience
- 1-3 month’s related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred education and experience
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED
- Experience working with and identifying sick cattle in a feedlot setting.
- Ability to communicate in English is preferred, not required.
