PRIMARY FUNCTION: To develop in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement, cardiovascular endurance, strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil's ability.

Educational Level: Bachelor Degree
Certification/License Required: Valid Georgia Teaching Certificate
Experience: None
Physical Activities: Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Written and oral communication; instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the learners, student management
The Board of Education and the Superintendent may accept alternatives to some of the above requirements.
Essential Duties
Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of physical education activities, as well as instructs pupils in the alcohol and drug awareness program.
Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning for conduct, discipline, and grading.
Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil; teaches physical education classes for handicapped pupils as necessary.
Provides appropriate safety instruction and safety checks on equipment and fields to ensure student safety.
Manages the issue, use and storage of all school owned instructional texts, supplies, and equipment.
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
Evaluates each pupil's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in sports participation.
Maintains professional competence through in-service and professional growth activities.
Selects, requisitions and inventories supplies, equipment, and instructional aids in concert with approved procedures.
Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress; identified pupil needs and assists other professional staff in helping pupils solve problems supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs; coaches at least two extracurricular athletic activities, if required to do so.
Meets expectations according to the regular high school teacher job description.
Maintains prompt and professional communication with parents.
Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
