Position Summary: The Student – Peer Writing Tutor works with students individually, in groups, or through the online lab to help them understand and apply course concepts. They encourage students to become independent learners by promoting study and learning strategies aimed at academic progress. Peer writing tutors function as academic role models who support students as they adapt to the demands of college life. They foster a sense of community among students at Cochise College and work cooperatively with other staff members to provide educational activities.Essential Functions: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Duties and Responsibilities: Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position: Tutors and facilitates one-on-one sessions, group sessions, and workshops either online or face to faceOffers critical feedback on writing assignmentsAnswers grammar, usage, punctuation, and reading questions as well as questions on MLAOffers students writing strategies for essays and research papersHelps student develop a variety of study strategiesHelps students clarify assignments and other materialParticipates in workshops and orientationsAttends training sessions held for student staffCollaborates with tutoring center staffPerforms other duties as assigned by the supervisorGeneral Expectations: Employees are expected to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Additionally, employees must understand the comprehensive role of the community college and cooperate and work harmoniously with students, faculty and staff, and the public. Employees will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Work Environment: Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office, classroom or lab setting with appropriate climate controls. Physical Requirements: Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate.Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting majority of time; walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are metMental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem solving skills are important
