Environmental Health Specialist III: (Illustrative Only) Conducts routine environmental health inspections; reviews plans and specifications for and inspects sewage systems; conducts field and office training to food and other establishment staffs and the public to educate on proper environmental health practices and procedures; assists in developing and implementing environmental health programs; provides consultation and guidance to local and state officials in environmental issues such as air pollution, water standards, and hazardous waste; inspects a variety of entities for compliance with various legal codes governing sanitary conditions; assists in monitoring and enforcing environmental health activity; conducts complaint investigations; recommends enforcement; assists in planning and implementing policies and procedures; prepares reports; maintains records; assists in budget preparation; performs research; prepares water and food samples for analysis; reviews plans and specifications for eating, drinking and other permitted establishments; attends annual training to maintain Arizona sanitarian registration; trains and supervises staff, may serve as acting director as assigned.
Environmental Health Specialist I: : A minimum of 30 semester hours of natural sciences coursework from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education as required by the State of Arizona to qualify for the Sanitarian Registration Exam. Must obtain Arizona certification as a Registered Sanitarian within eighteen (18) months of the date of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
Environmental Health Specialist II: Must possess a current certificate of registration as a Sanitarian issued by the State of Arizona (or the ability to receive reciprocity if licensed in another state); two (2) years of experience as a registered sanitarian. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
Environmental Health Specialist III: Must possess a current certificate of registration as a Sanitarian issued by the State of Arizona (or the ability to receive reciprocity if licensed in another state); four (4) years of experience as a registered sanitarian. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to be covered by county insurance.

Environmental Health Specialist I:

Good knowledge of:
- public/private water systems and designs;
- methods and principles used in water pressurization testing;
- principles, theories, and design of alternative waste water systems;
- current trends in the environmental health field.
Some knowledge of:
- basic engineering principles.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential functions of this position require: lifting up to 50 pounds, manual dexterity, fine motor skills, ability to communicate.
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly, incumbents may be required to kneel, crouch/squat, crawl, climb, stoop, turn/twist, balance, reach, feel or manipulate with hands.
