Anticipated starting salary: $18.25 - $22.50 hourly, dependent upon qualifications, plus a comprehensive benefits package to include membership in the Arizona State Retirement System.

NATURE OF WORK: Under general supervision provided by Solid Waste Operations Supervisor performs technical and localized supervision over assigned Solid Waste Urban Transfer Station.As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.
TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative Only) Directly responsible for the operation, maintenance and administration of an individual public solid waste collection station; ensures all equipment and facilities are properly operated and maintained; supervises the dumping of permitted refuse; determines best material handling practices for incoming solid waste; ensures all trucks are efficiently loaded to maximize refuse density and decrease hauling costs; monitors and makes on site corrections/modifications as required. Determines appropriate charges to be levied and receives fees, monitors revenue; cash receipts and deposits; prepares and maintains daily work reports. Supervises and schedules employees assigned to Solid Waste Urban Transfer Station, which may include inmate labor; ensures employees are continually trained in solid waste operations in order to meet customer expectation and support a healthy and sanitary environment. Employee may perform other duties as assigned.
Three (3) years progressively responsible experience working in the material handling industry generally, or solid waste industry, construction, trucking environment specifically. Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s License and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to individuals with six (6) months of customer service experience or simple bookkeeping experience.Considerable knowledge of:
- laws, rules, and regulations relating to transfer station operation;
- the operation, maintenance, and repair of transfer station equipment;
- occupational hazards and proper safety precautions;
- material handling techniques;
- the principles and practices of supervision;
- cash handling procedures and basic accounting principles.
Considerable skill in:
- the use and application of modern office equipment and procedures;
- supervising the work of others;
- assigning and scheduling work.
Ability to:
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public;
- regularly handle the lifting of up to 50 pounds;
- work under adverse weather conditions:
- communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
- read, write and speak English;
- follow written and verbal instruction.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed under general supervision in a variety of climatic conditions and may include confined spaces.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, large motor skills, ability to communicate.
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly, incumbents may be required to kneel, crouch/squat, crawl, climb, stoop, turn/twist, balance, reach, or handle.
Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important.
