Under supervision performs work of routine to complex difficulty providing for security, daily care and welfare of detainees in the Juvenile Detention facility; performs related work as assigned.

Please note: Hiring pay depends on qualifications.
Juvenile Detention Officer Trainee- $20.50 per hour
Juvenile Detention Officer- $22.62 per hour

**Up to $2,000.00 hiring bonus available**
As part of the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Pay Plan, Juvenile Detention Trainee and Juvenile Detention Officer positions on completion of the Training Detention Academy are eligible to opt in for a $2,000 ($1,000 for regular part-time, 20 hours per week) hiring one-time payment. This hiring one-time payment is to encourage individuals to pursue a career in Juvenile Detention and be retained with Coconino County Juvenile Detention. Individuals that opt-in to receive the incentive at the time of hire must retain employment at Coconino County Juvenile Detention Center for one year. This one-time payment must be paid back if employment is not retained for one-year. Please note that this program may end at any time without notice as operations, funding, and vacancies change


Typical Duties

JUVENILE DETENTION OFFICER TRAINEE
TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only)


  • Mentors, supervises, and directs detained youth
  • Performs searches for contraband
  • Conducts security checks, room checks, and maintains security of the juvenile detention facility
  • Coordinates and controls the movement and activities of detained youth
  • Deescalates, disciplines, and physically restrains detainees as needed
  • Provides crisis intervention
  • Assists in escorting or transporting youth
  • Kitchen duties (may include preparing and serving meals, dishwashing, and cleaning)
  • Housekeeping duties may include detention laundry, housekeeping, and routine maintenance
  • Maintains youth social files, writes reports, and enters timely and accurate data into Juvenile On-line Tracking System (JOLTS).
  • This position requires the ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
JUVENILE DETENTION OFFICER
TYPICAL DUTIES: (Illustrative only)
  • Performs the duties of a Juvenile Detention Officer Trainee
  • Distributes medications
  • Completes intake and release procedures
  • Create and implement youth programs
  • Conducts orientation with juveniles
  • Facilitates communication between youth and parents, social agencies, and/or service providers
  • May act as shift lead
  • Receives and inventories supplies from vendors
  • Advanced knowledge of detention standards
  • May organize and manage programs, visitors, support personnel, and volunteers within the facility
  • This position requires the ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to standing and walking for at least half of their scheduled work shift and are required to possess the independent body mobility to bend, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, and sit for prolonged periods of time and/or drive a vehicle; manual dexterity to reach, and grasp; handwrite or use computer keyboard; vision sufficient to see and read; hear and speak to communicate with customers in person and over the phone; may lift or restrain a detainee, may lift, push or pull materials or equipment of 50 lbs. or less.

Minimum Qualifications

JUVENILE DETENTION OFFICER TRAINEE
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or G.E.D.

JUVENILE DETENTION OFFICER
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Associate degree in related field; OR one year experience working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR six months experience as a Juvenile Detention Officer Trainee with Coconino County OR Bachelor’s degree in related field; OR two years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR six months experience as a Juvenile Detention Officer with Coconino County OR any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be at least 21 years of age. Must submit to background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility. Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within the first 3 months on the job. Forty hours of orientation training is required within the first month on the job. Must successfully complete an additional sixteen hours of COJET?certified training each year thereafter. Must have a valid driver’s license; if hired from out of state, must obtain an Arizona driver's license within 30 calendar days of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.
