Probation officers provide casework services to probationers at the direction of the Superior Court under the provisions of evidence-based practices and consistent with the Arizona Code of Judicial Administration (ACJA).
This position may be filled as a Probation Officer I or II.
Probation Officer I - $49,116- $51,571
Probation Officer II - $52,889 - $55,533
The duties of a probation officer include supervising the caseloads of assigned probationers, meeting with probationers in their homes or at their places of school / work, conducting interviews and social or pre-sentence / pre-disposition investigations, evaluating probationers' progress, performing searches, and making arrests. Probation officers may be at risk of being assaulted by probationers, family members and others in proximity to the probationers. As a result, the probation officer position is designated as a safety-sensitive position in accordance with ACJA
- 6-106(A) and ACJA
- 6- 107(A). All probation officers must "demonstrate, by proficiency testing, competency and understanding of the physical and verbal techniques and tactics presented at the defensive tactics training academy," ACJA
- 6-107(G)(1)(b). The proficiency testing is based upon whether they can perform the skills or tactics (or comparable alternatives) necessary for self-defense.
Under general supervision performs professional duties ranging from moderate to difficult in providing correctional and psycho-educational casework services to assigned youth at the direction of the superior court; performs related work as assigned; establishes and maintains a positive and healthy work environment.
Typical Duties
Essential functions of this position include but not limited to : driving; sitting at desk; working with and around other staff and clients; repetitive motion (hand-wrist) for writing and typing; vision-acuity (near) for reading and writing; hearing and speech (ordinary conversation) for interviews, fieldwork and communicating with staff and the public; touch (finger dexterity) for typing and writing. Perform and demonstrate through proficiency testing, competency in, and an understanding of physical and verbal defensive tactics and techniques, including the following, or their comparable alternatives : 1) Forcefully raise arms above head (straight arm wristlock and takedown), 2) Perform minor aerobic activity, 3) Stand for up to 2 hours at a time, 4) Engage in balanced movements, 5) Throw hand strikes (fist strikes and palm heel strikes), 6) Kick at targets below 24" (front snap kicks), 7) Perform controlled falls and return to standing position unassisted (break falls and recovery), 8) Complete hand strikes and kick drills at partial speed, 9) Engage in fighting techniques while on the ground, 10) Be able to bend knees lower center and touch the ground with one hand (break fall recovery and baton closing technique), 11) Be able to bend knees to a 45 degree angle (all ground techniques).
Minimum Qualifications
PROBATION OFFICER II - MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Bachelor's degree in Behavioral Science or related field and two years' experience working with children in a probationary or counseling setting; minimum age of 21 years; OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position; but must have Bachelor's degree which is required by (ARS 8-203) (Supreme Court Order Part 6; Chapter 1; Section 6-106; paragraph F, 3).
PROBATION OFFICER I - MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Juvenile) :
Bachelor's degree with a preference being given to a major or minor in behavioral sciences (ARS 8-203)
