Coconino County Public Works is seeking to fill four Operator III positions. 
Two Positions are located in Flagstaff and two positions are located in Williams.

Under limited supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in the operation of various mechanical equipment; performs related work as assigned.

  • Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment, including snow removal equipment for extended hours in extreme weather conditions
  • Works on construction and maintenance projects
  • Performs routine inspection and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and facilities
  • Oversees assigned projects
  • Sets up and maintains traffic control on maintenance and construction projects
  • Performs specialized operations of all heavy and light equipment
  • Inspects and applies appropriate maintenance required of assigned road system or project
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports
  • May assist in screening/interviewing applicants
  • May train and supervise staff on heavy and light equipment operations and road maintenance techniques
  • Intermediate computer navigation
  • Other duties as assigned
Essential functions of this position include but not limited to: driving; working with and around others on a work crew; repetitive motion (hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder) to operate equipment; vision acuity (near and far) for driving; hearing and speech to communicate with others and to understand work directives; touch for threading nuts and bolts. Environmental conditions include: working in adverse weather conditions; working around noise and vibration; working around mechanical equipment.Four years of progressively responsible equipment operation experience in a construction or maintenance setting, OR any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possess Arizona unrestricted Class A CDL with Tanker Endorsement and maintain throughout employment; Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) training and recertification, Flagging Certification; First Aid/CPR Certification. Must be able to operate Motor Grader during snow removal operations. Block Two training shall be completed, along with additional training in Block Three as outlined in the CCPW Internal Training Development Plan. Must also initiate LTAP Road Scholar I training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSGood leadership skills, good communicator to supervisors and crew members, ability to operate a variety of road maintenance equipment including the motor grader and transport truck. 

The ideal candidate will have 8-12 years of experience in road maintenance, including experience with snow removal operations. They will also possess the knowledge of how to operate all road maintenance equipment.

Positions are non-exempt from overtime
Positions are safety sensitive
Requires working various 12-hour snow shifts
May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs
Responds to emergency situations
Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances
Considerable knowledge of:
- Laws, ordinances and regulations pertaining to heavy haul transportation and road construction equipment operation
- Methods, materials, and equipment used in construction, repair, and maintenance activities
- Principles and Engages in field direction and leadership
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions related to construction industries
- Inspection and preventive maintenance practices applying to mechanical equipment
- Customer service
• Working knowledge of:
- Engineering techniques used in construction and maintenance activities
- Interpretation of blueprints, specifications, and construction plans
- Appropriate uses of the MUTC standards

• Skill in:
- Operation of heavy equipment in complex maintenance and construction activities
- Safe and efficient operation of vehicles and equipment, including emergency equipment under adverse/severe weather conditions
- Overseeing work zone traffic control on various maintenance and construction projects.
- Assess and establish traffic control plans.
- Use of hand and power tools in routine maintenance as well complicated construction tasks

• Ability to:
- Effectively handle lifting of various objects weighing up to 60 pounds
- Work varying shifts, extended hours, weekends and holidays
- Work extended hours in a variety of weather conditions
- Be available and respond timely when on-call during hazardous weather conditions
- Recognize hazardous conditions and react appropriately
- Operate all applicable equipment safely and efficiently
- Perform safe and effective snow removal with various types of heavy equipment including motor grader with wing attached
- Prepare and maintain records and reports
- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with employees, supervision, other agencies, and the public
- Follow written and verbal instructions, including manufacturers' service specifications
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
